‘This Is Us’: 10 Questions We Need Answered in Season 2
NBC’s This Is Us is one of the most popular new shows of the 2016–2017 television season, so it’s no surprise that the network wasted no time green-lighting it for two more seasons. Now that its renewal is a done deal, it’s time to start contemplating what we may see in Season 2 of the ensemble family drama. One thing’s for sure: There’s plenty of material to look forward to, as Season 1 left many loose threads hanging.
From the consequences of Randall’s drastic life changes to the events surrounding Jack’s death, here are 10 questions we need answered in Season 2 of This Is Us (listed from least to most urgent).
10. Will Kate kick off a singing career?
In the Season 1 finale, Kate (Chrissy Metz) decided she was going to pursue a singing career, just like her mom once did. We already know that she has a beautiful voice (as highlighted in an earlier episode of the season), but she’s also confessed that her insecurities often hold her back on stage. Whether she will be able to overcome her self-consciousness and use her talent to launch a successful career remains to be seen.
9. How did Beth and Randall meet?
Fans can’t seem to get enough of Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), and for good reason. The two make for one of the most likable couples on the entire show, if not the most likable. But while audiences have learned plenty of details about Randall and his family, we still don’t know much about Beth’s past or how she and Randall even met. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about their adorable love story in Season 2.
8. What happened to Miguel’s family?
The latter half of Season 1 saw Miguel (Jon Huertas) getting divorced from his first wife, Shelly. Though the two announced their decision to Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) together, she hasn’t been seen since — which is pretty odd, considering she is Rebecca’s best friend and has kids with Miguel.
So what happened to her and the rest of his family? Since none of them have appeared in the present-day timeline, there may have been some type of fallout, but we don’t know for sure.
7. What will Randall do for work now?
Randall made a major life change at the end of Season 1, quitting his longtime job. Now, the question is, what’s next? While leaving the demanding position may help ease his anxiety attacks, he does have his family to think about. It’s up in the air what he’ll decide to do next, whether it’s getting a new job, becoming a stay-at-home dad, or choosing a different path altogether.
6. Will Kevin choose Sophie or the movie gig?
In the Season 1 finale, Kevin was offered a major gig in a new movie directed by Ron Howard. But taking the role could mean putting his newly resurrected relationship with ex-wife Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) at risk. Will he be able to juggle both, or will he be forced to sacrifice either his career or his relationship? We’ll have to stay tuned to find out.
5. Will Kate actually marry Toby?
One of the reasons why Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) haven’t actually started planning their wedding is because they’re still getting to know each other. Though Toby tried to get Kate to open up many times throughout the season, she only did so toward the final episodes, when she finally began talking about her father’s death.
Whether they’ll continue to hold off on wedding planning in order to learn more about each other, or actually make it down the aisle in Season 2, remains to be seen.
4. Will Randall and Beth adopt a child?
Randall dropped a couple of pretty big bombs on Beth in the final episode of Season 1. In addition to quitting his job, he also announced he wanted to adopt a child. Viewers didn’t get to see much of Beth’s reaction, but we can assume she was taken aback. After all, she didn’t seem particularly onboard with having another child during a brief pregnancy scare earlier in the season. Will she have a change of heart? It’ll definitely be interesting to see how that conversation turns out in Season 2.
3. How did Rebecca and Miguel get together?
One of the biggest mysteries of This Is Us is how Rebecca and Miguel ended up together — especially considering that Miguel was Jack’s best friend. Did the two bond over the loss of Jack? Or did their connection come much later? Hopefully, we’ll get some more answers about their story in Season 2.
2. Were Jack and Rebecca separated at the time of his death?
Toward the end of Season 1, Jack and Rebecca’s marriage wasn’t in a great place. Jack had agreed to move out of the house for a few days, following some tense arguments over Rebecca’s decision to go on tour. The two exchanged some ugly words, so it’s still unclear whether they’ll continue their separation into Season 2 or what the status of their relationship will be at the time of Jack’s death.
1. How did Jack die?
This Is Us fans have been wondering how Jack passed away, ever since his death was revealed earlier in Season 1. We know that he died when the kids were still pretty young, but what exactly happened? Though we’ve seen Jack in several perilous situations throughout Season 1 and fans have plenty of theories, the true circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be revealed. One thing we do know: It’s going to be absolutely heartbreaking.
An official premiere date for This Is Us Season 2 has yet to be announced, but fans can likely count on it being sometime in mid-to-late September 2017.
