‘This Is Us’: Here’s Why Fans Are Worried About Rebecca Pearson In Season 4

When This Is Us wrapped its third season finale, fans were left with a million questions about Rebecca (Mandy Moore). In a heartwrenching flash-forward, the Pearson matriarch sat in bed as Randall (Sterling K. Brown) came to visit. However, it seems Rebecca didn’t recognize her son, as Randall had to clarify his relation to her. Now, seven episodes into the fourth season, the NBC series has yet to return to the future. But in the season 4 episode 8 promo, it seems viewers will finally find out what happens to Rebecca on This Is Us. And it’s all starting sooner than fans expected.

[Spoilers for This Is Us Season 4 Episode 8 ahead!]

What happens to Rebecca in the ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Episode 8 promo trailer for ‘Sorry’

In the This Is Us promotional trailer for “Sorry,” NBC teased what’s next for Kevin (Justin Hartley) after sleeping with Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison). The promo also hinted at major development for Deja (Lyric Ross) and Malik (Asante Blackk). But the majority of This Is Us fans noticed something wrong with Rebecca.

Halfway through the clip, Randall reveals Rebecca is visiting Philadelphia. “Mom and I are off to our tour of Philly,” Randall says. “Can’t wait for some quality R and R time.”

However, it appears a fun day out with mom becomes worrisome. At work, Rebecca shows Randall something on her phone. The clip flashed forward to Randall, who is speaking with Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) at home.

“What’s wrong?” Beth asks. And Randall glances up at Rebecca, who is showing his daughters something on her phone. But if that wasn’t troubling enough, the tagline for the episode is “Every decision has consequences.” So yeah, we’d say something major is looming over Rebecca on the Nov. 12 episode of This Is Us.

Following the Nov. 5 episode, This Is Us fans went online to express their worries and predictions about Rebecca. And for the most part, it seems most viewers believe Rebecca will start to show symptoms of whatever is affecting her in the future.

“I think [Rebecca]’s showing [Randall] pictures of people without realizing he knows the people in the photos,” a fan on Reddit wrote.

“I’m guessing she starts showing photos of baby Jack and says ‘and this is (family member who Randall clearly knows),'” another Redditor wrote. “He says ‘of course I know so and so’ and gives her a look of confusion. She says ‘oh of course you do Randall, I’m just tired from the flight.’ She then walks over to show the girls the photos of baby Jack and Randall wonders if it’s tiredness or something more.”

Meanwhile, other fans got a little more specific, wondering if Rebecca could be mistaking baby Jack for Kevin due to Alzheimer’s. “Maybe something like she’s showing them pictures of baby Jack, but continues to refer to him as Kevin,” a fan suggested. “Something that makes him question Alzheimer’s.”

And some fans even theorized Rebecca could be mistaking Miguel (Jon Huertas) for Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). “I hope we get an episode where Rebecca refers to Miguel as Jack, I’m both ready and not ready for that to happen,” a fan wrote.

After the third season finale of This Is Us, creator Dan Fogelman hinted that Rebecca could have Alheimer’s of dementia based on the events from the flash-forward. However, Fogelman didn’t confirm or deny what will actually happen to Rebecca as the series moves forward. He told Entertainment Weekly:

All I can say about Rebecca’s status is, I don’t think that your read is a read that would be unexpected based off the limited amount of material we’ve seen. But there are other things that could be going on there as well. You wouldn’t be able to know it just from that. There could be many suspicions as to what is ailing Rebecca, including just aging and being in that place of life. The read of it being Alzheimer’s and dementia is not unexpected; it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily right.

Meanwhile, Moore teased the season 3 flash-forward could mean Rebecca’s death is near. “We’re in the final throes of her life, the last couple of weeks, I would say,” she told EW in April 2019. “You get that sense of urgency of the family gathering, for one reason or another, and in my mind, it’s to sort of say farewell.”

But it doesn’t look like fans are getting a straight answer about Rebecca anytime soon. When EW asked Moore about Rebecca’s potential illness, the actress revealed viewers may not find out for another two seasons. “I think that will be revealed in the next season or two, for sure,” she said. “Could go either way.”

Regardless, Rebecca’s journey on This Is Us is going to be one wild ride over the next few seasons, according to Fogelman in September 2019.

“We’re in the ballpark of a much older woman at this point,” Fogelman said of the This Is Us flash-forward. “It’s a part of our journey, in the seasons to come… I can say that Mandy is going to have so much stuff to do. And it’s exciting because Mandy is so tremendous in the series and we’re really just getting started. By the end of this series, she’s going to need a long vacation. We’re going to work her really hard.”
