‘This Is Us’ Season 4: What Fans Can Expect
This Is Us Season 4 doesn’t arrive until the fall so, until then, fans have been guessing how the season will play out after the Season 3 finale ended with a flash-forward. The end of This Is Us Season 3 found the Pearson family coming together in the future, with Rebecca possibly on her deathbed.
What fans can expect in Season 4 of This Is Us
This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman dished a bit on what fans will see in the show’s fourth season and, it turns out, the next season won’t pick up following that ending, which created so many questions.
In a nutshell, Fogelman explained, the new season will be “restarts for everybody.” He told EW: “And midpoints. I think it’s going to be very ambitious and sprawling in terms of how it plays with time. Many of our characters are in the middle of their stories, and that’s a point where characters are opening up to new things and new things are starting. That becomes a very exciting period for almost all of the characters, and for some of them, maybe a very scary period in terms of how fraught their storylines are.”
Why This Is Us will be a restart for characters
While fans might be eager to see what happens with the characters after the Season 3 finale, there’s a good reason that the show will be focusing on what’s happened in the past. Fogelman explained that he’s already written the first episode of season four and confirmed it will not pick up where the last season ended.
He explained: “In order to start returning to that period, you first have to fill in some of the middle, and that’s going to start happening in these next few years. They’re going to inform what you’ve already seen.”
He continued: “In some ways, because characters are restarting… it’s going to feel in some ways almost like a version of season one in the middle of our series, in that we’re starting these new stories after we’ve told a lot of the stories in full for the past three seasons.”
Mandy Moore revealed fans will see more of Jack and Rebecca
During a recent interview with TVLine, Mandy Moore shared that while fans won’t see what happens next for future Rebecca, they will learn more about Jack and Rebecca’s journey.
She explained: “The end of that episode left us with so many questions. I know that we’re not going to dip into that world with my character too much, because you sort of need to let it marinate a little bit and you want to use it with great impact.”
Specifically, she shared, viewers will get to see how the trip the couple took together played out, with Moore noting: “This season… we’re gonna kind of follow them back from that road trip in California to back to Pittsburgh and really see how they become a couple. I’m curious to see, like… how does he really open himself up, how do they get engaged? There’s so much of that really defining time in their relationship that I’m curious to explore.”
