‘This Is Us’ Season 5: What Chrissy Metz Has to Say About Kate’s Story Will Concern You

This Is Us fans haven’t seen much from Kate (Chrissy Metz) in comparison to her two brothers, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown). Kate is the only sibling from the Big Three that hasn’t been seen in the far-future. But the fourth season started shedding some light on the character’s teenage years. This helped viewers understand her in the present day. Now, we’re getting more pieces to the puzzle as Metz recently revealed This Is Us Season 5 will feature a new storyline about Kate we haven’t seen before. That said, prepare yourselves because the actor hinted it will be traumatic.

Chrissy Metz discusses Kate storyline in ‘This Is Us’ Season 5

In an interview with People Now published in May 2020, Metz teased what’s coming next for Kate in This Is Us Season 5. She previously spoke with creator Dan Fogelman about her role. And ultimately, there’s something on the horizon that could have potentially challenged the actor. But Metz was up for the challenge.

“There is a story, a through-line, coming down the pike about some experiences that shaped Kate as a woman — as an adult — that we haven’t seen yet,” Metz said. “I remember Dan giving me a call and he’s like, ‘How do you feel about this? Are you going to be able to tackle this? How are you going to feel about it?’ And I’m like, ‘No let’s do it, I think it’s super important.’”

She continued, “II won’t give away what it is exactly. It’s something that we haven’t seen and we had no idea that Kate went through.”

Then before wrapping up her teasers about Kate’s storyline, Metz confirmed there is something to be worried about. “Oh, there’s trauma, for sure,” she said.

Now, Metz’s comments may not come as much of a surprise. In an interview with Deadline published in April 2020, Metz opened up about Kate’s journey in This Is Us Season 5. The actor suggested viewers would discover more about the character’s past and her relationship with food.

“For Kate, in particular, we’re going to find out even more in-depth next season as to why she’s decided to, not necessarily use food, but use a substance — hers being food — because she’s been through some things that we haven’t discovered yet,” Metz said.

Of course, it’s not out of the ordinary to wonder whether Marc (Austin Abrams), teenage Kate’s (Hannah Zeile) abusive ex-boyfriend, will return in This Is Us Season 5. Toward the end of the fourth season, Marc was kicked out of Kate’s life when Rebecca (Mandy Moore) uncovered all the red flags. But even so, the damage was done.

In the end, fans got to see how Marc influenced Kate’s marriage in the present-day. However, could the character come back next season? Only time will tell. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker said, “For the time being, that’s the last we’ll see of Marc.”

Regardless, we know present-day Kate will go through something big when This Is Us Season 5 finally airs. In the fourth season finale in late March, viewers discovered Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) adopt a girl named Hailey (Adelaide Kane). Then when speaking with Entertainment Weekly in May, Brown teased where his on-screen sister will head in the fifth season.

“The exploration of the adoption that Toby and Kate are going to go through is going to be very interesting,” Brown said. “I’m always just curious, and kudos to Sully [for] just showing the difficulties of connecting with his child. It’s not something that people talk about all the time.”

Clearly, Kate has plenty going on when This Is Us returns for its fifth season. So stay tuned.
