‘This Is Us’ Season 5: Are Kate and Toby Ready to Adopt? Chrissy Metz and Chris Sullivan Tease the Couple’s Storyline

We’re less than a month away from the This Is Us Season 5 premiere, which means we’re finally getting answers about the Pearson family soon. The fourth season finale left everyone’s storyline up in the air, including Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan). The couple decided to adopt another child in the present day. But will it be smooth sailing? Recently, Metz and Sullivan opened up about Kate and Toby’s adoption storyline in This Is Us Season 5, and it seems things might get a little complicated.

Kate and Toby work through a lot of issues in This Is Us Season 4. Baby Jack is blind, and Toby has a difficult time accepting this fact. He copes by secretly exercising and confiding in the CrossFit Crew. But he doesn’t involve Kate. Meanwhile, Kate bonds with their new neighbor, Gregory (Timothy Omundson).

Toward the end of the season, Kate confronts Toby about becoming the father Jack needs. So Toby has a breakthrough. He begins to come around, even building his son — and wife — a music studio in the garage. Then in the finale, Kate and Toby celebrate Jack’s birthday and decide they want to adopt together. And in the future, This Is Us revealed adult Jack Damon (Blake Stadnik) has a sister named Hailey (Adelaide Kane)

While fans are rooting for Kate and Toby to find happiness in This Is Us Season 5, Metz wondered whether the couple is ready to adopt. The actor also revealed the upcoming storyline may be challenging.

“To be human is you feel like you’re always in over your head,” Metz told Entertainment Weekly in October. “I’ve heard so many people numerous times say, ‘You’re never really ready for a child.’ Like, you get ready.”

She later added, “It’s going to be challenging, for sure. But I think it’s lovely that they both want it and that there’s the best intentions there.”

Metz also noted there are multiple moving parts in the adoption process. So naturally, the family dynamic is bound to shift.

“You don’t ever know when you adopt what personality or how the dynamics are going to shift and change,” Metz said. “And at what age are they going to adopt? So all of those factors are huge in adoption. And then, of course, still making sure that Jack, as this sweet little baby is taken care of, too. So there’s all of those things at play.”

But whatever happens, it appears Kate and Toby’s upcoming experience will allow them both to understand Randall (Sterling K. Brown) a little more.

“We can sympathize with people, but until we experience it ourselves, we don’t really get it,” she said. “Even with Rebecca [Mandy Moore] as well, as a mom, with a child who is being adopted. So yeah, there’s a lot to unpack.”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sullivan opened up about Kate and Toby’s upcoming This Is Us Season 5 storyline. But like Metz, Sullivan hinted the couple will face a few challenges.

“There’s going to be struggles around it,” Sullivan said of the adoption arc. “I’m sure there will be individual personal feelings between Toby and Kate. I’m sure her family will have thoughts. We’ll see how the writers handle it. But I can guarantee conflict.”

So what does this mean for Kate and Toby in the future? Viewers already know Toby isn’t wearing a wedding ring in a flash-forward. But according to Sullivan, This Is Us will finally deliver some answers, as the fifth season will cover “the longterm health of Kate and Toby’s relationship.”

Clearly, Kate and Toby have a lot going on when This Is Us returns. So get ready.  The two-hour season 5 premiere airs on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
