In the fourth season finale of This Is Us, Kevin and Randall argued over Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) medical care. But the disagreement quickly turned into a screaming match, unveiling 40 years of resentment.

Then the first few episodes of This Is Us Season 5 illustrated how Kevin and Randall’s fight strained their relationship. The Pearson brothers had very few brief conversations, each time filled with discomfort and awkward silences. But, things started to change after Randall took a trip to New Orleans.

In This Is Us Season 5 Episode 6, Randall discovered the truth about his birth mother, Laurel (Jennifer C. Holmes). The experience also allowed Randall to start healing and let go of all the “bad stuff.” So Randall decided to call Kevin and possibly made amends with his brother.

That said, Kevin was a bit preoccupied with Madison (Caitlin Thompson), who just went into labor six weeks early. Kevin was in Vancouver to film a movie. So he was desperately trying to get back to LA for the birth. Kevin also took a rain check on his conversation with his brother.

Meanwhile, Randall showed up for Kevin in a different way. At the end of This Is Us Season 5 Episode 7, Randall and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) called Madison and supported her in Kevin’s absence.

“I spoke with Kevin,” Randall told Madison. “I know he’s trying to get to you. But we just wanted to say if you need anything, in the meantime, don’t hesitate to call. We’re still driving back from New Orleans. So if you want us to have some food sent over there, or anything, we just want you to know that we’re here.”

He continued, “If you want, we can stay on the phone with you for a while. We really can stay on with you. You’re family.”

It seems Kevin and Randall’s relationship is on the mend in This Is Us Season 5. Then in an interview with Deadline, Hartley hinted that the Pearson brothers are “back on the right track.”

“The gesture that his brother would fill in for him and would do what he thinks Kevin would do for him. It just shows Randall’s heart,” Hartley said. “I think something like that is what’s needed sometimes to get things back on the right track. So that’s good.”

Meanwhile, Hartley revealed his hopes for Randall and Kevin moving forward, suggesting that the birth of the twins could be what brings the two brothers back together. Hartley said:

That big family rift, a lot of times it takes a big event to bridge that gap and bring those two people together. What a grand gesture! And Kevin is all about grand gestures. I’m hoping that gesture, that willingness to be there, that dedication, to ‘fill in’ for Kevin when he couldn’t be there, I’m hoping that leads to them finding some truth and a way back to their relationship.

This Is Us Season 5 airs Tuesday nights on NBC.
