The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Premiere Is Coming and the New Update Will Make Up for the Long Wait

The This Is Us Season 5 premiere is coming to NBC, and the network’s most-recent update does not disappoint.

Back in March 2020, viewers wondered when This Is Us would return. The hit drama was able to finish its fourth season in full, despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But many fans were worried the current crisis would impact the production schedule moving forward. Nevertheless, it seems NBC is confident the fifth season will be released this fall.

In June, NBC unveiled its fall 2020 lineup, which included This Is Us Season 5 in the Tuesday 9 p.m. ET time slot. That said, the network didn’t include exact premiere dates. Meanwhile, creator Dan Fogelman recently confirmed the fifth season hasn’t begun filming

“Not sure yet on production start. Not sure when new eps will air,” Fogelman tweeted on Aug. 16.

Now, This Is Us has officially announced the season 5 premiere date. So mark your calendars for Nov. 10, 2020.

Of course, it’s clear the This Is Us Season 5 release date is later than usual. For the first four seasons, NBC started airing new episodes in September. But seeing as production typically begins in July, the premiere’s delay was bound to happen.

Even so, the network revealed a nugget of exciting news in the recent announcement — the first episode of This Is Us Season 5 will be two hours long.

“The Pearsons are coming home. #ThisIsUs returns with a two-hour premiere this fall on @NBC,” the show’s official Instagram wrote.

After the This Is Us Season 4 finale aired in March, Fogelman revealed the fifth season was well on its way.

“We are far advanced already,” the series creator told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve already written the season premiere of next year and broken, I think, five episodes of the season, and we have mapped out plans for the entire next and sixth season.”

Meanwhile, Mandy Moore, who plays Rebecca Pearson, indicated the new season will be one to watch.

“I know that [creator Dan Fogelman] has written the first two episodes of the season. I know it’s super ambitious, like our show always is,” Moore told TV Insider in July. “I marvel at how extraordinary our writers are, and how innovative and inventive they are. I am excited.”

It’s also possible the original plans for This Is Us Season 5 may shift due to current events. In the Aug. 16 tweet, Fogelman confirmed the new season will cover the pandemic

“We’ve decided to attack things head-on,” he wrote. “Very proud of @ThisIsUsWriters. Same planned ending.  Same route to get there.”

Then on Aug. 25, NPR revealed the first two episodes of This is Us Season 5 will address the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests.

“Considering everything that’s going on in our country, we have an opportunity and almost a responsibility — without getting into the politics of it all — to capture what this is,” Fogelman told the publication.
