Throughout This Is Us Season 4, Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin have been feuding over Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) care. The Pearson matriarch was recently diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment.

Now, Randall wants to do everything in his power to cure his mother, including a clinical trial in St. Louis, Missouri. But on the other hand, Kevin wants Rebecca to do what she wants, which is to live out her remaining days with her family. However, Randall convinces Rebecca to do the trail.

Then in the finale, Kevin learns about Rebecca’s decision. He suspects Randall’s influence and the two brothers have a terrible argument — one they may not be able to come back from. Then in the middle of the fight, Kevin learns he is having twins with Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) best friend, Madison (Caitlin Tompson).

Meanwhile, Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) have had quite the journey in This Is Us Season 4. The couple had a rough patch in their marriage. But in the finale, Kate and Toby celebrated baby Jack’s birthday. They also decided to adopt another child.

In an interview with Gold Derby, Hartley opened up about the This Is Us Season 5 premiere, hinting where fans will find the Pearsons in the present day.

“Season 5 is going to pick up shortly after — or maybe immediately after — the finale, at least for the current storyline,” Hartley said.

The actor then shared the storylines teased in the fourth season finale will come up when the NBC drama returns.

“Look, Kevin’s gonna have to deal with this pregnancy, being a dad, twins, his relationship with madison, because god only knows what that is,” Hartley said. “He’s gonna have to deal with work, he’s gonna have to deal with Randall. What is that gonna look like? Are they gonna get back on the right track or is it just total estrangement?”

Hartley also touched on Rebecca’s storyline, noting “it seems she’s going down in a quick way.” He then confirmed This Is Us Season 5 will feature new characters because the Pearson family is expanding.

“Everyone’s got new stuff coming up. We got new characters coming on, obviously, with kids and all that,” Hartley said. “So it’s going to be an interesting season. It’ll be fun.”

This Is Us premieres typically start with the Kate, Kevin, and Randall’s birthday. Then in the fourth season, viewers saw a glimpse of the Big Three’s 40th celebration, and there’s a rift between Kevin and Randall. Of course, we now know why the brothers aren’t speaking. But regardless, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Isaac Aptaker confirmed This Is Us Season 5 will feature the Big Three birthday.

Then after the fourth season finale, creator Dan Fogelman shared Randall won’t be spending his birthday alone. And while Kevin will be with Rebecca and Kate, Randall will be with his immediate family.

“It’s not him sitting on a couch in the fetal position and crying the entire time,” Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly in March 2020. “It’s fair to say there’s a longing and also an immediate family rallying around to kind of try and make it all work.”

But whatever happens in the This Is Us Season 5 premiere, it appears there’s plenty to look forward to as the Pearson family story progresses.

“I’m very excited about — especially with where the world is right now — the uplift and I would call it almost a rebirth that comes next season,” Fogelman said. “It’s kind of a rebirth and a lot of new beginnings. But particularly the word birth would be a big thematic part of next season.”
