The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Trailer Teases Kevin and Madison’s Future Together

We’re less than two weeks away from the This Is Us Season 5 premiere, and NBC just dropped a new promo trailer to highlight what’s coming next for the Pearson family. The preview teased storylines that left fans hanging in the fourth season finale, including whether Madison (Caitlin Thompson) is Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) fiancée. But the recent trailer hinted Kevin and Madison’s relationship in the This Is Us premiere may not be what fans previously expected.

The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 promo trailer hints whether Madison is Kevin’s fiancée by the premiere

In the This Is Us Season 4 fall finale, Kevin revealed he had a pregnant fiancée by his 40th birthday. Then in the season finale, Madison told Kevin she was pregnant with twins. Meanwhile, a flash-forward to the far-future confirmed Kevin had two children — a boy and a girl.

Even so, creator Dan Fogelman hinted Madison may not be the pregnant fiancée from the fall finale. However, he noted the answer would be revealed in the This Is Us Season 5 premiere. “There’s an immediate answer coming to all of that,” Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2020. “But I think that there’s basically many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story.”

Now, the This Is Us Season 5 trailer may have given viewers an answer early. In the middle of the promo, Kevin is seen rubbing Madison’s pregnant belly. They’re clearly happy about their growing family. But no rings are spotted. Kate also calls out her brother for using the term “fiancée.”

“You’re gonna need to explain your use of the word fiancée,” Kate says.

So what’s the deal? From Kate’s remarks, it seems the couple isn’t engaged or Madison became Kevin’s fiancée without telling anyone. But whatever happens, there’s a lot to unpack when This Is Us returns.

‘This Is Us’ Season 5 will cover the coronavirus pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement

The This Is Us Season 5 trailer also included clips featuring current events, such as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. Both Kevin and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) are wearing masks in two separate shots.

Meanwhile, Randall, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), Tess (Eris Baker), Annie (Faithe Herman), and Deja (Lyric Ross) sit together watching news coverage of the protests against police brutality following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. “What we’re dealing with as a people, it’s just so tragic,” Randall says offscreen.

When speaking with People in September 2020, Brown revealed This Is Us Season 5 will still focus on the Pearsons. However, the new season will “briefly” cover current events, and they “won’t be washed over completely.”

Then in an interview with Dr. Oz from Oct. 1, Brown teased how Randall’s perspective will be “illuminated” as This Is Us addresses the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Randall, in particular, being a Black man raised in a white family, he may have a very particular perspective. It shall be illuminated,” Brown said. “I hope people will appreciate the thoughtfulness that has gone into trying to reflect the world in which we live in today on our show.”

Then when Dr. Oz said Randall has the ability to “speak in both cultures,” Brown hinted how the subject may come up on the show.

“Sterling, kind of like Randall, has the ability to translate. But sometimes, it can be rather fatiguing having to explain systemic racism when you’re not the person that’s responsible for it,” Brown said. “So that’s a little bit of a teaser as well.”

Of course, there are more storylines to delve into when This Is Us Season 5 airs on NBC on Oct. 27. Right off the bat, the trailer reminded fans about Randall and Kevin’s fight in the season 4 finale. Then at the end of the teaser, the two brothers reunite at the cabin on the Big Three’s 40th birthday — and it looks tense.

There’s also a sense of worry surrounding Rebecca (Mandy Moore). In the promo, the Pearson matriarch says she feels “like magic.” However, Kate displays concern across her face. Last season, Rebecca was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, and she decided to do a clinical trial in St. Louis after a major push from Randall. Then in an interview with The Wrap, Fogelman revealed next season is going to be “challenging” for Rebecca.

“It’s going to be, obviously, a challenging chapter for Rebecca moving forward,” Fogelman said in March. “We have a big storyline planned for Mandy next season in present-day as an older woman, and also her whole past timelines.”

Meanwhile, we’ll find out more about Randall’s past in This Is Us Season 5. In season 4, the character struggled with his mental health. The storyline will continue into the new season. When speaking with TV Insider, Fogelman confirmed Beth will support Randall as he continues therapy with Pamela Adlon’s Dr. Leigh. Then in the promo trailer, Beth tells her husband, “Hey, I’m not going anywhere.” She later adds, “This pain is not forever. Nothing is forever, except us.”

The preview also shows Randall questioning whether he shares a birthday with Kevin and Kate. “I’ll never really know what happened that day,” Randall says as the promo highlights a clip of young William (Jermel Nakia). But it looks like we’re going to find out more about the day Randall was born. Still speaking with TV Insider, Fogelman shared the This Is Us Season 5 premiere will “give a lot of context to the day before [the kids’ birth].”

Clearly, there’s a lot going on when This Is Us comes back. But no matter what happens, just get the tissues ready. We know this one’s going to be an emotional journey.
