Will ‘This Is Us’ Get a Spinoff After the Series Finale? Creator Dan Fogelman Discusses the Drama’s Future

This Is Us Season 4 introduced a wide variety of phenomenal new characters. From Jennifer Morrison’s Cassidy Sharp to Asante Blackk’s Malik Hodges, fans quickly fell in love with the show’s latest additions. And of course, given all the new faces, some fans wonder whether any new members of the cast will one day give rise to a show of their own. But does creator Dan Fogelman plan on making a This Is Us spinoff after the series finale? At this point, it seems more likely the NBC drama will die with the Pearson family.

When speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Fogelman revealed he hasn’t exactly planted any nuggets for a This Is Us spinoff series to happen.

“The group of people that you see, you can feel when you come to these things — even if we’re completely insane and the show is no good — you can feel how much the people who work on the show love the show,” Fogelman said. “I feel a responsibility as one of the leaders of it to end it properly, to do it properly, and walk away with it with no regrets that we understayed or overstayed.”

However, Fogelman also teased that a This Is Us spinoff could be a discussion sometime in the future — just not right now. “I really don’t think about that at all,” he said. “Yet.”

Nevertheless, it seems the show creator wants to end the series on his own terms and has a big plan for the current storyline.

“Really, I think it would be — I’m not supposed to talk about it a lot but I have the plan and I know what we’re going to do,” Fogelman said.

When will ‘This Is Us’ end?

Sadly, it’s likely the NBC drama won’t last forever. But you can prepare yourselves because Fogelman and co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker were kind enough to share when they expect This Is Us to end.

“We’re roughly in the middle of where the television series is going to go,” Fogelman told THR prior to the season 3 finale. “We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan. I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future. We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is.”

Then, when speaking with Deadline in February 2019, Aptaker admitted the team plans to wrap This Is Us “about three seasons in the future.” And as the interview was given prior to the fourth season, fans can probably expect the series finale in season 6.

As it turns out, Aptaker and Fogelman’s plans for the series finale have been shared among the This Is Us cast and crew. Aptaker told Deadline:

From day one, Dan came in with his master plan for the big picture stuff of the show and said, ‘I think this is where we end up. I think this is what I know. Let’s figure out the rest together.’ So all of the writers and the actors really know everything. We’re all pretty good at keeping secrets by now, it’s been three years, but it’s a total open book for everyone who works on the show, so there are no secrets from each other.

And when speaking with Extra in May 2019, Milo Ventimiglia teased his knowledge of the This Is Us series finale. He noted the ending sounds “amazing.” That said, Ventimiglia also felt that “by the time we get there it is going to morph into something that we could not dream or imagine it could become.”

Regardless, the This Is Us showrunners are doing their best to create a “satisfying” end to a legendary show. According to Deadline, Aptaker said:

I would hope that when we reach our ending, people think it’s a really satisfying end place, that makes sense, and it feels like they’ve watched something that is a complete piece of work because that’s really how we’re trying to plan it. Almost like you would a book, or a super-long movie. We’ve had this end in mind for a long time, so we’re able to plan for it, and try to make it feel like it’s a whole, as opposed to a series that’s going to go endlessly.
