‘This Is Us’: The Fan Theories About What ‘The Big 3’ Are About to Dig Up Are Explosive

The past three episodes of NBC’s This Is Us centered around each member of “the big three” — Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and then Kate (Chrissy Metz).

Next week, we will watch as the siblings dig up a time capsule that they buried at their family cabin when they were teenagers. The producers allude to an “explosive” scene with the “big 3”, and fan theories are running wild about what happens.

What happened that led ‘the big 3’ to the family cabin as both teenagers and adults?

In the past three episodes, Randall, Kate, and Kevin each found themselves at a turning point in their life — as teens and adults. Young Randall (Niles Fitch) was having nightmares and his girlfriend, Beth (Rachel Hilson) was about to take him to a group therapy for individuals who lost a loved one.

Teenage Kevin (Logan Shroyer) quickly married his high school sweetheart and is ready to come to his sister’s rescue. Kate (Hannah Zeile) is in a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship. She is stranded at the family cabin with her unstable boyfriend, who locks her outside in the cold. Rebecca (Mandy Moore), Randall, and Kevin are all heading to the cabin to save Kate from this questionable guy.

While in the present day, Randall went through a home invasion causing him to have a severe mental breakdown. Kevin is ready for marriage, but cannot find the storybook romance he is looking for. Kate’s afraid her marriage is falling apart after going on a retreat for disabled children without her husband.

“The big three” convene at the cabin in the present-day and the 1990s in the upcoming episode of This Is Us. Producers and fans both commented on what is about to happen next.

Producer Isaac Aptaker alludes to an explosive episode on ‘This Is Us’

Although fans thought that ‘A Hell of a Week: Part Three’ was going to be the heart-wrenching episode, it turns out we have to wait one more week. Next week’s episode, ‘The Cabin,’ is going to bring everything together according to the producers.

“Also a bit explosive, as we tend to do on our episodes where everyone gathers — things come to a head, some secrets are revealed,” Aptaker tells Entertainment Weekly. “But there’s also this really beautiful story that is about this time capsule that the Pearsons bury at the cabin in the early teenage years and how that comes to play in the present.”

The episode is going to be both “explosive” and “beautiful” at the same time. That sounds precisely like This Is Us. We are also excited because it looks like Rebecca is going to step up even more in the absence of Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).

“But there were many, many years after he was gone where it was really Rebecca,” Aptaker talks about how she stepped up to carry the family after Jack was gone. “And this week sets up our next episode where she really is a hero.”

What will the ‘sad three’ episode dig up on ‘This Is Us’ next week?

“I have a very bad feeling about what they are about to dig up,” one user on Reddit wrote.

Fans are debating what the siblings are going to find when they uncover the time capsule next week. The range of ideas goes from disturbing to happy and everything in between.

Some fans suggest that Randall or Kevin kill Marc, and the teenagers buried his bones. Then in the present-day, the adults dig up the body. Others believe it’s something more sentimental, and not as disturbing as that.

“I want to guess it’s something that Jack left for them knowing full well they would dig it up eventually and find it,” another Redditor added. “He knew they were burying the time capsule, so he added whatever it is on top.”

Other fans also debate whether or not the contents of the time capsule are what starts the fight between Kevin and Randall.

“Whatever they dig up, time capsule or not, probably ties in to why they start fighting,” wrote one Reddit user. “You think they really have an idyllic mountain getaway on this show?”

Whatever it might be, it looks like we have to wait and see. This Is Us returns Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, at 9 pm ET on NBC.
