‘This Is Us’: This Disturbing Fan Theory About How the Show Ends—in a Huge Plot Twist—Will Blow Your Mind
Now that This Is Us is currently on fall break, fans are busy discussing everything up to this point. Viewers often re-watch the series so far and come up with ideas regarding how the show will end. The new theory is disturbing—yet plausible. Let’s take a look at the plot twist and how it could mean devastating things for Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia).
What happened in the season 4 fall finale of ‘This Is Us’?
Before we delve into the plot twist theory, it’s important to note what happened at the end of the season 4 fall finale. This Is Us often ends the finale episodes with a significant jump into the future.
Viewers thought they were watching present-day Rebecca mistakenly buy flowers at the grocery store instead of baked goods. She then is distraught in a Chinese restaurant when she can’t find her phone. The matriarch has a panic attack and is eventually returned home by the police.
This moment is when we find out that the events surrounding Rebecca are nine months in the future. She returns to the Pearson cabin where we find Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) getting ready to celebrate ‘the big three’s 40th birthday.
When Rebecca asks where Randall (Sterling K. Brown) is, Kevin must remind her that he and his brother are not on speaking terms right now. Many concerns are running through fans’ minds about what is wrong with Rebecca. Some viewers believe she may be showing signs of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Could the addition of M. Night Shyamalan mean massive plot twists for ‘This Is Us’?
Recently, in a thread on Reddit, This Is Us fans contemplated whether or not Rebecca’s memory loss and confusion could mean that we do not see the actual events of what happened during some of the flashbacks.
“[I’m] a little worried about how some of the Jack and Rebecca scenes that only involve them, like at the hospital after the fire, are going to be revealed to have gone down much differently than what we have seen,” pondered one fan on Reddit.
Fans began discussing whether this theory is plausible and how it would play out on the show. Many viewers agree with the original poster.
“Like if they shoot a scene from Rebecca’s eyes and then replay the scene through another perspective, and it unfolds differently,” explained one Reddit user. “This would explain part of why M. Night [Shyamalan] joined the crew. Because this is a great theory and would be bad*ss to watch!”
Shyamalan joined the cast of This Is Us for a short cameo in episode 2 of the fourth season. He played himself as a director for a film Kevin is starring in. We have not seen Shyamalan since episode 2, but that does not mean he isn’t working behind the scenes. The director is well-known for significant plot twists in his movies and might be helping the writers of This Is Us work up a huge plot twist of an ending.
Fans reveal instances that could support the memory distortion theory on ‘This Is Us’
After one fan described how it is plausible that we see an alternate perspective, many other fans began to chime in with reasons that they believe the theory could be correct.
“This is a good theory,” wrote one viewer. “We already have been sort of introduced to this with Kate when she only remembers the good times with her father, Jack.” The fan continues, “Randall tells her that their dad got angry that day at them for the big mess (when they visit their old house).”
The way that Kate remembers the scene with Jack is very different from what happened that day. She believes it was a happy fun moment, but Randall recalls that Jack was very mad at them.
“I’m convinced that the coffee cup Jack left in the family car has some meaning because the show lingered on it a couple of times last season, and there was a scene where Rebecca got all teary over it,” contemplated another fan.
“My hunch is that it will turn out that Jack relapsed into drinking and was hiding it, and that the cup contained alcohol,” the user continued. “If I’m right, it was echoed when Kevin had his relapse while little Jack was being born and came to the hospital with vodka in a water bottle.”
With the small plot twists This Is Us has shown already, it is plausible that there is a significant one coming. This theory might be right. Find out when the series returns from fall break on Jan. 14, 2020.
