‘This Is Us’: This Rebecca, Randall, and Kevin Theory Will Shatter Your Heart Into a Thousand Pieces

This Is Us Season 4 might be on hiatus, but the fandom is still reeling from the flash-forward in the fall finale. The NBC drama introduced a string of worrisome storylines, including new struggles for Rebecca (Mandy Moore), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and Kevin (Justin Hartley). And although This Is Us fans will have to wait to find out what will happen to Rebecca, Randall, and Kevin, fans have already come up with a few theories. But not going to lie, they won’t exactly calm your nerves before the winter premiere on Jan.14.

[Spoilers for This Is Us Season 4 ahead!]

What happened to Randall, Kevin, and Rebecca in the ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 fall finale?

In the This Is Us Season 4 fall finale, titled “So Long, Marianne,” the NBC series goes nine months in the future from the present day — aka the Big Three’s 40th birthday in August 2020.

Throughout the flash-forward, fans learn Rebecca is suffering from memory loss and her condition had yet to be determined. The Pearson matriarch is escorted back to her family by the police.

Upon arrival, Rebecca is greeted by Kevin, Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Miguel (Jon Huertas). She then asks where Randall is.

“Randall’s not coming,” Kevin says. “We’re not speaking, remember?”

Fans predict why Randall isn’t speaking to Kevin and Rebecca in ‘This Is Us’

Following the This Is Us fall finale on Nov. 19, everyone wondered why Kevin and Randall aren’t speaking in the flash-forward. And many fans speculated that Kevin and Kate will get angry at Randall for withholding information about Rebecca’s illness.

However, one user on Reddit questioned if it’s really that simple, asking if Randall “wanted to do something regarding the illness and Kevin/Kate didn’t agree with it.”

“I think it’s completely different, I feel like they do know [about Rebecca’s illness] and are divided on what the actual illness is,” the fan wrote.

They continued: “Sometimes when one sibling wants to get help for a loved one, another sibling may disagree with it, and these issues can divide people. I don’t think it’s as simple as ‘oh Randall didn’t tell them’ because if that was the case, why did Kevin or Kate let Rebecca leave without assistance in the first place?”

Meanwhile, other fans suggested Kevin isn’t the one not on speaking terms with Randall — it’s Rebecca.

“I still am not even sure if I believe that there’s a rift between them,” a fan wrote on Reddit. “I kind of feel like Rebecca is the one that doesn’t want to see Randall and the kids are just going along with it as to not upset her, but then she keeps forgetting that she doesn’t want to see him so that’s why they are having to remind her they’re not speaking.”

But for the most part, most fans theorized a heartbreaking future for Randall and Rebecca when This Is Us continues.

“I’m calling it,” a fan wrote. “Randall hasn’t seen her in 12 years.”

Then another This Is Us viewer added to the theory about the 12-year-long rift between Rebecca and Randall. And ultimately, the fan noted it would make sense of the flash-forward in season 3.

“On the season 3 finale, he walked in and said ‘I’m Randall Pearson and I’m your son.’ Of course it makes sense for it to be because of her dementia,” the fan wrote. “But it would be like the writers to hint at it like that. You’ve blown my mind.”

What ‘This Is Us’ producers say about the feud between Kevin and Randall

At this point, anything could happen when This Is Us Season 4 returns. But it seems executive producer Isaac Aptaker has already teased what’s to come when the series comes back.

When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Aptaker revealed it’s possible the fight between Kevin and Randall stems from a secret. However, the executive producer also noted the situation is complicated.

“I mean, so many of the people that we brought in to speak to what it’s like to have a parent with dementia or Alzheimer’s talked about the tensions that flare up between siblings, between spouses, when it comes to that person’s care,” Aptaker said. “There’s just so many decisions and there are never clear-cut answers.”

He continued: “So, yes, I think that the secret could be it. There’s going to be a lot of complicated decision-making down the line regarding Rebecca’s treatment and care. And that all makes existing sibling rivalries rear their heads, for sure.”

That said, fans will find out what happens between Randall and Kevin in the second half of This Is Us Season 4. Aptaker confirmed the next few episodes will lead up to the season 5 premiere. And the new season will pick up where the fall finale flash-forward left off.

“You are going to have to wait and see when we get back to that time. But because we know it is our fifth season premiere [as each season begins on a Big Three birthday]. We’ll see the rift, see the falling-out, see how it all happens over the back half of the season and into the beginning of next,” Aptaker said. “It’s all coming up in the very immediate future for the show; this isn’t something that’s going to be a long wait.”
