‘This Is Us’: Why Kevin’s Future Wife Could Still Be Zoe or Sophie

Fans of This is Us were thrown a curveball in the Season 4 finale that they were definitely not expecting. Though viewers have become accustomed to the drastic twists and turns of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) romantic life, they haven’t been able to decide if future Kevin winds up with his high school sweetie Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) or settles down with Madison (Caitlin Thompson). Then there’s also the idea of Zoe (Melanie Liburd) to contend with. The season concludes leaving fans still wondering who Kevin’s wife actually will be.

The end of the season hit viewers hard when it’s revealed that Kevin is going to be a father

When Kevin returned home from comforting Sophie after the death of her mother, he turned grief into a catastrophe when he slept with Madison, Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) best friend. Fans hoped it would be just a one night stand, but Madison pops in to break the news to Kevin that they are expecting. The bigger surprise: its twins.

Later, we see in a brief flash-forward that Kevin’s son and daughter join him at Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) bedside so we know that they remain a part of his life — we just don’t know how exactly that plays out in his relationship with Madison.

Could fatherhood lead Kevin back into Zoe’s arms?

Now that he has kids of his own, maybe he and Zoe could consider getting back together.

Fans remember his brief tryst with Zoe in season 3 ended when she announced that she would never want kids. Kevin, on the other hand, was sure that he would one day want to start a family. Zoe was pretty serious about her decision to avoid motherhood.

However, now that Kevin isn’t just speculating about children, but actually will have some of his own, could this change Zoe’s point of view?  Maybe she can see his transformation to fatherhood in a positive light and also, take heart in knowing it won’t be her responsibility to carry children for him. Or, now that Kevin has his own kids, the pressure is off Zoe and she can be his wife and not the mother of his children. There is still potential there that she could be the fiance alluded to at Kevin’s 40th birthday.

Is there still hope for a Sophie-Kevin conclusion?

After the season 4 finale aired, fans took to Twitter to announce their dismay. Viewers on team Sophie were refusing to believe that Kevin could wind up with anyone else while others still speculated over which of his romantic encounters was going to be strong enough to last.

This is Us show creator Dan Fogelman revealed to People: “There are many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story … Kevin has a journey ahead of him.”

Fans can hold tight to that, knowing that there are more roller coaster rides in store for Kevin’s heart. We can’t assume that Madison and Kevin wind up together in the end just because they are having children together. For those on team Sophie, there is still hope.

Fogelman also said that in addition to Sophie, Cassidy, another former romantic partner of Kevin’s, might not be “done with” either.

The finale of Season 4 was full of heart-wrenching moments for fans of the Pearson clan. Between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin fighting it out with some of the harshest verbal blows to date, and Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) deciding they want to adopt another child, the entire episode has us gasping for air.

Then, when Madison assumes that Kevin will not want to be a part of her pregnancy and she fears that she is interrupting his quest for his true love story, his response knocks the wind right out of fans. Kevin, who at this point doesn’t know she’s pregnant with twins, goes back inside to tell Madison: “Whatever you need, I am all in… The love of my life will be my child.”
