This Is What Laverne Cox and Meghan Markle Talked About When They Chatted About British Vogue Cover
Everyone can’t stop talking about Meghan Markle’s latest project: guest-editing the September issue of British Vogue. Markle was initially asked to be on the cover of the special issue but suggested guest-editing instead. Her idea was eagerly agreed to by the editors of Vogue and people are just starting to get a tease of what the issue will hold. Titled “Forces for Change,” the magazine focuses on change-makers and people committed to doing good all around the world. There are a few very special faces that some fans have recognized on the cover, including transgender activist and award-winning actress Laverne Cox.
Who is Laverne Cox?
Born in Mobile, Alabama, Cox suffered a lot of bullying and harassment in high school due to her unconventional clothing choices. Cox went on to transition from her male biological birth gender to the gender she identifies with: female.
She also began a career in the entertainment industry. Cox first started achieving acclaim in the VH1 show TRANSform Me, which was ultimately nominated for GLAAD media awards. Cox’s best-known role is on the hit series Orange Is the New Black. She has played the character of Sophia Burset — a trans woman who is sent to jail for credit card fraud — since 2013.
Critics and fans alike praise Cox for the way she has shone a light on the transgender community and her positive, inspiring attitude. As one of the most visible trans actresses in Hollywood, Cox has paved the way for a whole new generation of LGBTQ entertainers. It seems that one of Cox’s admirers is none other than the Duchess of Sussex herself.
Why did Meghan Markle want Laverne Cox on the British Vogue cover?
People magazine reports that while Cox knew she was to be featured in the “Forces for Change” issue, she had no idea that it was Markle who had such strong feelings about Cox being featured. She certainly had no idea that Markle would want to speak to her on the phone. Markle spoke to Cox early one morning and the two were able to chat about why the September issue is so important and what the two love most about each other.
What did Meghan Markle and Laverne Cox chat about?
During Markle and Cox’s phone call, Markle was quick to praise Cox for all the work she does on behalf of the transgender community. She thanked Cox for “being an inspiration,” and told her to keep up all of her good work.
Cox referenced Markle’s past career as an actress and told her how much she loved her TV show Suits. Markle replied “awww” and, according to Cox, seemed genuinely surprised that Cox was so familiar with her television work. Cox raved about how inspirational Markle herself is and drew comparisons between the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry’s late mother: Princess Diana.
Cox pointed out that Princess Diana wanted to be of service to the world and it seems as though Markle is following directly in her footsteps, while still remaining very much her own person. She also praised Markle’s decision to include a blank mirrored space on the “Forces for Change” cover, signifying that every reader of the magazine has the chance to make a difference in the world.
Being featured on the September cover of British Vogue is a really big deal for Cox — she will become the first transgender woman to be featured on the iconic magazine’s cover. The honor doesn’t go unnoticed by Cox, who stated that it is a “dream come true.” For both Markle and Cox, September 2019 is a month that will go down in their lives as truly special.
