This Is What Taylor Swift Has to Say About Her Toxic Relationship With Kanye West
Most pop culture fans know of the infamous time Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 Video Music Awards. But some fans don’t realize that was only the beginning of their feud.
For years, West and Swift have been at each other’s throats. Recently, Swift gave us some more insight into their complicated relationship. You won’t believe the way West treated the pop star and the conclusion she’s drawn from their long feud.
Kanye West insulted Taylor Swift in his song ‘Famous’
In 2016, West released his song Famous in which he says the lyrics “I made that b**ch famous,” referring to Swift. After fans attacked him for insulting Swift, yet again, West defended himself in a now-deleted tweet. He claimed that Swift gave him permission to use her name during an hour-long phone conversation. His wife, Kim Kardashian, backed him up and insisted she’d heard the phone call.
Swift acknowledged they’d spoke and that she was aware of the song, but she insists she was never made aware of the actual lyric and had no idea that she’d be called a b**ch. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Swift mentioned the infamous phone call and how she’d tried to make light of the whole situation with a joke in her song Look What You Made Me Do.
“It was definitely just, like, a fun moment in the studio,” she said, “with me and Jack [Antonoff] where I wanted to play on the idea of a phone call — because that’s how all of this started, a stupid phone call I shouldn’t have picked up.”
The lyric from Look What You Made Me Do that Swift was referring to said: “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Because she’s dead!”
According to Swift, that lyric refers to her growing and learning what she should and should not share with the world. When she was young, she was eager to please, and it led her to do things she wasn’t comfortable with. So, the old Swift was dead, and now she’s a new, more mature, Swift. She found a way to say that while using a phone call to also reference the West debacle.
Taylor Swift just wanted Kanye West to respect her
When Rolling Stone asked Swift if she felt that she handled the West phone call properly or if there was anything she regrets, she said: “The world didn’t understand the context and the events that led up to it. Because nothing ever just happens like that without some lead-up.”
Swift wasn’t just upset that West called her a b**ch, she was upset about the way the entire thing was handled. And it wasn’t just this event, it was the whole dynamic in their relationship and how West continued to treat her.
“All I ever wanted my whole career after that thing happened in 2009 was for him to respect me,” she said.
The way Swift reacted to West’s disapproval is common. When someone criticizes us, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of trying to prove them wrong – trying to convince them that they were wrong and trying to get them to admit their mistake. Many of us can remember a time when we’ve fallen into that trap with bosses, co-workers, and friends.
“I just so badly wanted that respect from him, and I hate that about myself,” Swift admitted, “that I was like, ‘This guy who’s antagonizing me, I just want his approval.'”
And for a time, West acted like he wanted to give her that. They went out to dinner and West would say “really nice things” about her music. To Swift, it felt good, it felt like she could finally get past all the ugliness before. But then the 2015 VMAs happened.
Taylor Swift finally gave up on trying to befriend Kanye West
According to Swift, West called her before the awards show and in the sweetest way possible, asked her to present the Vanguard Award to him. She happily accepted. To Swift, this marked the end of all that hurt — a reconciling.
However, the night of the VMAs, Swift gave the personalized speech she’s prepared when West suddenly stood up and interjected. “You know how many times they announced Taylor was going to give me the award ’cause it got them more ratings?” West yelled to the crowd.
“And I’m standing in the audience with my arm around his wife,” Swift said, “and this chill ran through my body. I realized he is so two-faced.”
West later tried to apologize again, but at this point, Swift had enough. She’s excepted that they’re not on the best terms, but she’s over it. Swift doesn’t allow West to have power over her any longer. And that’s probably the healthiest attitude she could have.
