This Request by Meghan Markle Has Fans Enraged

Meghan Markle receiving criticism in the press is nothing new. However, the controversy reached new heights in recent weeks, when Markle stepped out to watch her friend Serena Williams play tennis at Wimbledon. While Markle likely knew that her appearance at the event would draw some attention, even she couldn’t have predicted the scandal that would ensue as a result of her relatively brief outing that day with her friends. Read on to see what has royal watchers so outraged and whether or not the palace is likely to respond to the controversy.

Why are people mad at Meghan Markle?

In early July, Markle made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon. The Duchess of Sussex, who has made relatively few appearances following the birth of her son, Archie Harrison, in early May, was a vision in casual wear, sporting a dressy blazer and blue jeans. Markle sat courtside, in full few of hundreds of spectators, most of whom were excited and thrilled to get such a close look at her. Still, it didn’t take long before the goodwill was dampened slightly.

Several people have claimed that when they tried to take pictures of Markle, they were instructed by a royal security officer not to take any pictures because Markle was there in a private capacity. Clearly, the warning from the security officer wasn’t terribly effective, since multiple TV cameras and crews were already taking pictures of Markle in the stands, but reportedly, the officer continued to shut down individuals with cameras that were hoping to get a good shot of Markle.

Needless to say, the incident made front-page headlines, with magazines and talk shows picking it up and talking about exactly what happened that day and whether or not Markle was in the right with the no-photo ban.

Does Meghan Markle have a right to privacy?

Many fans are angry, to begin with at the level of privacy that Markle and Prince Harry have required in the past several months. From the super-private baptism of Archie Harrison, that included a media ban on all photos before and after the ceremony, to this latest incident at Wimbledon, many fans are beginning to lose patience with the Sussexes.

While Markle, as a private citizen, is entitled to all the privacy of every other American, when she married into the royal family, she became a public servant. To an extent, her lifestyle is financed by the people of England, who recently ponied up $3 million collectively to renovate their new home, Frogmore Cottage. Because of the nature of her position, it seems fair to expect Markle to give up certain privacies that other citizens are entitled to.

Are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry taking things too far?

In the wake of the Wimbledon scandal, a few have stepped up in support of Markle and made some valid points. One publication pointed out that Markle wasn’t in the royal box at the event, giving weight to her security officer’s point that she was there as a private citizen. It can also be noted that Markle’s public appearances, where she’s open and giving with her time, make up the majority of her outings. Still, it’s hard to ignore the mounting ill will against Markle and Prince Harry, and their crusade for privacy.

Whether or not the couple will have to make some changes in their PR strategy in the weeks to come remains to be seen, but for now, there’s no denying that Markle has, once again, found herself in a world of media outrage. As for the palace, they have remained mum so far, but it is likely that there is some scrambling behind the scenes to try and put a positive spin on everything that has occurred thus far.
