‘Sisters First’

Bush Hager and her sister, also named Barbara Bush, recently published a sweet children’s book called Sisters First. It’s a testament to the strong bond between siblings, especially girl siblings, and in their case, especially twin girl siblings!

“We’ve always known how lucky we are to have a partner in everything we’ve done in our life,” Bush Hager told earlier this month. “We’ve always had someone to enjoy experiences with. We always had each other even on days that were scary. That’s one of the reasons we wrote this ode to sisterhood.”

Bush Hager added that she sees this same bond in her daughters, Mila and Poppy.

“When Poppy was born, I was so impressed with Mila. I remember Mila was two-and-a-half and Poppy said something like ‘goo goo gaga’ and Mila was like ‘Poppy is going to rule the world.’ It was such a beautiful sentiment of not being jealous—it was totally embracing who she was.”

And now Mila and Poppy have a new partner in crime, their baby brother, Hal. Bush Hager this Thanksgiving gave thanks for this year and all the changes that have brought such joy in the family’s life.

She proclaimed on Instagram, “How grateful I am!!!!” along with an adorable photo of her now family of five: husband Henry Hager, their daughters, Mila, 6, and Poppy, 4, and almost four-month-old son Hal.

Hal’s arrival is a comfort to the sadness the family experienced last year at losing both the elder Bushes, Barbara in April of 2018 and George H.W. in November the same year, as well as their other beloved grandmother, Jenna Welch, earlier this year.

She wrote a column for Southern Living last year during the holidays, expressing her grief at losing her dear grandmother.

“The void Ganny left is enormous; her place at the table will never be filled. I miss her jokes and laughter. I even miss her arguing with me about my love of cats.”

The touching gift Bush Hager found from her grandmother

It turns out, Bush Hager’s grandmother, who was always doing needlepoint work, had been working furiously to create needlepoint stockings in reserve for all the Bush great-grandchildren she knew she would never meet.

“I didn’t know if there was enough for Hal,” Bush told People in November.

“She tirelessly worked. And so my aunt just emailed me on Friday and said, ‘What address should I send Hal’s stocking to?’

“What a beautiful blessing and what a beautiful thing that she did so that all three of my kids will have made. [Hal] will never meet her, but they’re so ingrained, I mean, literally in this case, in the fabric of our family — that he’ll have a stocking that his great-grandmother sewed.”
