This Week in Trailers: ‘Orphan Black,’ ‘Insurgent,’ and More
In an entertainment world where we’re constantly waiting on the next big thing to come out, trailers have never been more important (albeit a tad overused sometimes). There’s never been more shows to watch, movies to see, and sequels to wait on in our history, making for a climate where teasers and clips are the only thing keeping us sane while we wait for a movie slated to come out 3-5 years from now (looking at you, Marvel).
Thankfully, trailer culture is here to assuage our anxiety, showing us what’s next in three minutes or less. It ultimately represents just a small portion of the final product, but more often than not it’s enough to tide us over until the release date. This week, we’ve been given plenty to get excited about, from a first look at a new clone in Orphan Black to the strange political drama of the live action Cinderella, along with lots more.
1. Insurgent, releasing March 20, 2015
Following the success of Divergent as the next Hunger Games-esque YA series about an adolescent girl in a post-apocalyptic future, Insurgent promises more Shailene Woodley than we ever thought we’d want or need in this lifetime. The latest minute-long spot features Woodley’s pixie haircut, lots of running and smashing through windows, and vague half-speak about changing the world. If nothing else, it’ll be a guilty pleasure to tide us over until Age of Ultron releases in May, so at the very least it’ll be entertaining.
2. Cinderella, releasing March 13, 2015
Robb Stark, Lady Galadriel, and a cute blonde Cinderella make up the cast for the live action remake of the Disney classic set to debut this March. In the latest teaser though, we see a weird political plot, where the king attempts to prevent Robb Stark from finding Cinderella post-ball, teaming up with the Evil Stepmother to get both(?) her daughters wed into royalty. Hopefully this odd twist will serve to freshen up the plot rather than confuse things, but clearly there are no guarantees.
3. Straight Outta Compton, releasing August 14, 2015
Tupac and Biggie both have biopics, so it’s only natural that N.W.A. gets their chance to shine. The debut red band trailer features an introduction from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre running down why they decided to make this movie now, as a parallel to the police brutality we’ve seen run rampant across the country of late. Incidentally, it looks like they found dead ringers for both Dre and Ice Cube, giving this one some solid potential to tell a rich story from the early, chaotic days of hip hop.
4. Orphan Black, Season 3 debuts April 18, 2015
It may just be 15 seconds, but the latest teaser for BBC’s Orphan Black shows us the brand new clone the Season 2 finale hinted at, and a chilling delivery from Tatiana Maslany in a brief conversation. We know very little about what the new season will bring us, making anything we get at this point valuable pieces to a much larger puzzle. Here’s hoping we end up seeing more between now and Season 3’s premiere in April.
5. Hitman: Agent 47, releases August 28, 2015
It’s not immediately clear if our title character is the hero, villain, or a little of both, but Zachary Quinto is starring alongside him in this sequel to the fairly unsuccessful adaptation of the Hitman videogame movie from 2007. Despite the 2:30 runtime of the trailer, we get little information as to the plot, outside of the usual explosions, flashy fight sequences, and ridiculously cool action shots. Odds are it won’t be much more than your average video game movie, but hey, who knows. Maybe someone has finally mastered the gaming adaptation. We just highly doubt that.
