‘Thor 4’: Natalie Portman Is Just as Curious About Jane Foster’s Breast Cancer Storyline as You Are

There is a long way to go until Thor: Love and Thunder debuts as part of Marvel Studios’ Phase Four. Currently, Thor 4 is set to be released on Nov. 5, 2021, and it will star Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. But, of course, fans are curious about the upcoming adaptation and how closely the movie will follow the beloved comic books, including Jane’s breast cancer storyline.

Jane Foster’s breast cancer arc in the comics

For those of you who don’t know, much of Jane’s arc deals with her battle with breast cancer, according to Den of Geek. In the comics by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman, Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) loses his ability to wield Mjölnir after Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) whispers something into his ear.

Meanwhile, Jane is diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. But, she becomes worthy of picking up Mjölnir and steps in to defend Asgard as the Might Thor. However, each time she transforms, she eliminates the chemotherapy toxins and her human body continues to suffer.

Director Taika Waititi discusses potential breast cancer storyline for Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster in ‘Thor 4’

Oct. 14, Thor 4 director Taika Waititi discussed the possibility of bringing Jane’s battle with breast cancer to the new movie, noting its powerful impact on the comics.

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books,” Waititi told Variety. “I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on.”

Nevertheless, nothing has been determined. And it seems it’s a personal wish for the director at this point.

“Personally I really love that storyline,” Waititi said. “But whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen.”

The New Zealand filmmaker then hinted there will be many changes to the arc once production begins in March 2020. And it seems the Thor 4 team doesn’t know how much of the original storyline will make the cut in the end.

“We’re not sure if we’re going to do a complete lift of that whole storyline. These things change through the shoot and even when we’re editing sometimes,” Waititi revealed to the publication. “Like, ‘Let’s get rid of that storyline where she’s got breast cancer. We’ll change it to something else, or maybe she’s fine.'”

A few days after Waititi made his statement about Jane’s potential breast cancer arc in Thor 4, Portman responded to the rumors. And the actress acknowledged the impact of the potential story, as breast cancer is often overlooked and underrepresented in television and film.

“It’s just very rare that these kinds of big entertainment films look at more serious, real-life issues,” Portman told Variety on Oct. 19.

That said, the future Jane doesn’t know all the details of the Thor 4 story — or where it’s headed. But, Portman expressed her in the breast cancer storyline, noting her excitement over the buzz.

“I really don’t know anything about it,” she said. “I haven’t seen anything, but I’ve heard the same rumors as you have, and it’s exciting to think about. “

Regardless of what happens, it seems Portman and Waititi are interested in seeing Jane’s arc with breast cancer play out in Thor 4. But, as they both mentioned, nothing is decided. So fans will have to wait and see where Disney’s Marvel takes the new film once it premieres in 2021.
