‘Thor: Love and Thunder’: Natalie Portman Just Spilled On What It’s Really Like to Hold Mjölnir
Natalie Portman is making her highly-anticipated return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel has been very secretive about the project, but we do know that Portman will be the next person to wield Mjölnir. With the film set to open in theaters next year, Portman recently revealed what it is like holding Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) hammer.
Portman returns to the MCU
Apart from recycled footage, the actress has not appeared as Jane Foster since Thor: The Dark World, though the studio did reference her in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok.
Many fans suspected that Portman would never return to the MCU, but that changed this summer when Marvel announced that she will be reprising her role as Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder. The studio also revealed that Jane will become the new Thor, though exactly how that transition comes about is yet to be seen.
Portman opened up about holding Mjölnir during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Without spilling too many details, Portman revealed that the weight of Thor’s hammer really took her by surprise.
“It was nerve-racking, like someone’s gonna call me out about something. I didn’t get to practice [the hammer] ahead of time, so I picked it up and it was kind of heavy. It was like, ‘Oooh,'” she shared.
We can only assume that Portman got used to the hammer as filming is about to start in Australia. Thor: Love and Thunder is set to open in theaters on November 5, 2021, and director Taika Waititi recently confirmed that production will begin this summer.
Waititi opens up about ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
In addition to Hemsworth returning as Thor and Portman coming back as Jane, Love and Thunder will also see Tessa Thompson reprising her role as Valkyrie.
Unfortunately, Marvel has not released any details about the movie’s plot. Waititi, however, recently opened up about starting production and revealed when filming will likely get underway.
“Well, we move down to Sydney around April, I think, maybe. And then we’ll start shooting probably around August, I think,” he stated.
Waititi has several locations in mind in Australia, though the brushfires that have devastated the region could derail some of his plans. In fact, Waititi admitted that things are very chaotic in Australia at the moment and the situation appears to be getting worse.
Although we do not know much about the movie’s plot, it is expected to pick up following the events in Avengers: Endgame. In the film, we learned that the Asgardians had set up a new home on Earth after Asgard was destroyed in Ragnarok.
Thor also passed the mantle of leadership to Valkyrie, who will likely play a big role in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Is a trans superhero coming to the MCU?
Over the past few years, Marvel has made a lot of strides making the MCU more inclusive. Marvel president Kevin Feige has already hinted that at least one gay superhero will be introduced in Phase 4, and his more recent comments suggest that a trans character is also going to debut in the near future, possibly Thor: Love and Thunder.
During a Q&A session at the New York Film Academy, Feige was asked if Marvel would ever introduce a trans superhero in a movie. In response, Feige revealed that they are planning on it and that it would happy “very soon.”
“Yes, absolutely yes,” Feige shared. “And very soon. In a movie we’re shooting right now.”
Feige did not offer any more details on that front, but fans are hoping that the first trans superhero will be Sera, who is part of the comic titled Angela: Asgard’s Assassin.
Sera is a woman who is part of a line of male angels called the Anchorite of Heben. She was assigned a male gender when she was born, and the co-creator of the story, Kieron Gillen, recently confirmed that Sera is trans.
‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ casting list reveals trans role
Marvel has not commented about introducing Sera in Love and Thunder. This past summer, there were rumors that the studio was looking for a trans actress to play the part of a character named Jessica.
We have no idea if the rumors are true, but we do know that Love and Thunder will feature a bisexual character in Thompson’s Valkyrie. The actress has been very open about her character being bisexual, something that will likely be confirmed in the upcoming film.
Hopefully, we will learn more as Thor: Love and Thunder gears up for filming this summer, and is scheduled to be released November 5, 2021.
