‘Thor’: The Career Move That Nearly Cost Chris Hemsworth the Role
MCU star Chris Hemsworth, known worldwide as the God of Thunder, has played the pivotal avenger since 2011’s Thor. At this point, the actor has perfectly mastered his hammer swinging skills and transitioned into the comedic Thor fans have craved — whether knowingly or not — since his first standalone installment.
We can never imagine another actor playing the role; Chris Hemsworth physically, vocally, and emotionally embodies everything our mental percepts for Thor retain. However, the MCU star nearly lost out on the role due to a decision made four years prior to his career-catalyzing turn as an original Avenger.
Though some journeys to fame are seamless, those are few and far between. Chris Hemsworth had to ascend the ladder to Hollywood’s A-list just as many others did before him: with some critical flops and not-so-glamorous stints along the way. From Australian soap operas and various other lesser-known TV shows, most of his roles geared him up for the big leagues; however, one reality TV-oriented decision may have been a mistake.
Chris Hemsworth says ‘Dancing With the Stars’ nearly ‘lost [him] the job’
During an interview with BBC Radio 1, Chris Hemsworth discussed his career before Thor came about and, along the way, he and the interviewer stumbled upon his time spent on Australia’s version of Dancing With the Stars. The MCU star, when discussing his appearance on Australia’s version of DWTS, stated, “Kevin Feige said that almost lost me the job.” He went on to explain what Kevin Feige told him:
We all saw your audition. We’re passing it around the office, and everyone was really, you know, into it. And then, a few of the girls started googling your name and up came this dancing video, and I thought, ‘oh no. Thor dancing. The fans are going to eat us alive.BBC Radio 1
Chris Hemsworth goes on to joke that his participation in the series made him “more nimble on [his] feet” and that you may see “a bit of that Dancing With the Stars quality in Thor.”
While Thor is definitely nimble on his feet, Hemsworth’s appearance on Dancing With the Stars has managed to go relatively unreferenced and unnoticed. He embodies the role so well that Feige, and others behind the production, likely never needed to worry in the first place. And, who says Thor can’t be a great dancer?
What we know so far about ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in 2021 with a returned Natalie Portman set to take on the role of Mighty Thor. Tessa Thompson is also back as Valkyrie and, of course, Chris Hemsworth will portray the God of Thunder.
According to CNET, Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor will work alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, rather than taking over the mantle, as many fans initially believed would be the case. Waititi will return to direct the film, which will most likely lead to another laugh-out-loud installment.
Though Thor and Mighty Thor will reportedly fight alongside one another, many still believe that this film will be Chris Hemsworth’s last time playing the character; he returned, despite the ending of his contract, for the script lured him back, according to CNET.
