‘Tiger King’: New Special Will Feature the Last Woman Who Saw Don Lewis Alive
It’s been nearly a month since Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness dropped and at least three new specials are on the way to satiate any lingering questions. While one is an “after show” of sorts, another will explore the disappearance of Carole Baskin’s second husband, Don Lewis. The third, however, investigates “what really went down” behind the scenes. Among those tidbits is a first-hand account from the last woman who spoke with Lewis in 1997. Here’s what we know.
TMZ to reveal what happened behind the scenes in ‘Tiger King’
Former Oklahoma zookeeper, Joseph Maldonado-Passage (aka Joe Exotic), might be serving his 22-year sentence in federal prison, but fans want to know more about Tiger King.
Maldonado-Passage’s sentence stems from a murder-for-hire plot to murder animal rights activist, Carole Baskin, as well as animal abuse charges. Baskin and her third husband, Howard Baskin, currently run Big Cat Rescue. Both were featured in Tiger King with the ongoing feud with Maldonado-Passage that led to his arrest.
The latest in spin-off shows has officially arrived by way of TMZ’s Tiger King — What Really Went Down. The episode airs Mon., April 13 at 9 p.m. on Fox with host and founder of TMZ, Harvey Levin.
“It was a really well-done docuseries and it clearly struck a chord,” Levin told the NY Post.
“Increasingly, we’re seeing some of these streaming services roll out stories that not only are good TV, but that really start important conversations. As entertaining as the show was, there are some real issues that demand attention right now, and I think the show brought that to light.”
Here’s what will the show will focus on
In What Really Went Down?, Levin interviews 15 people. Some of them are from Tiger King, but others are new. Levin promises to reveal new, key information regarding the Netflix docuseries — especially regarding Baskin’s missing husband.
“You’re going to hear from a law enforcement official who is conducting this investigation, and he says to us that Don Lewis [Baskin’s second husband] was murdered,” Levin said.
“Number two, you’re going to hear the evidence that the sheriff is looking at, in terms of who might have done this, and it’s very revealing. We talk to a woman who’s never spoken before, who definitely was one of the last people to see Don [alive], somebody who worked for him.”
Don Lewis’s case remains open
Lewis disappeared in 1997 and declared dead five years later. According to TMZ, What Really Went Down? aims to look closer that the story while also poking deeper into Maldonado-Passage’s guilt in that plot to kill Baskin.
“The big questions we’re diving into are, was Joe framed? Did he abuse the animals? Who killed Carole’s husband? Should these zoos be shut down? And what is the status of the various investigations right now?,” Levin said.
He added that one of the interviews includes a sheriff who believes in Maldonado-Passage’s innocence.
“You’re going to have to decide whether that’s true or not,” Levin said.
“According to multiple people on our show, Joe told multiple people that he wanted Carole dead. He was obsessed and talked about it all the time. The interesting thing about that is if he really wanted her dead, typically you don’t tell the world you’re going to do it.”
Regardless, fans can make up their own minds after watching.
