‘Tiger King’: Why Carole Baskin ‘Would Not’ Be In a Reunion Special

Netflix is dropping the eighth installment of Tiger King on Easter Sunday with host, Joel McHale. The episode will feature new interviews with Jeff and Lauren Lowe, Saff, Erik Cowie, John Finlay, John Reinke, and Rick Kirkham. One Tiger King star you won’t see, aside from Joseph Maldonado-Passage (aka Joe Exotic), is Carole Baskin. Here’s why.

Carole Baskin isn’t impressed with her portrayal in ‘Tiger King’

Animal rights activist, and Maldonado-Passage’s arch-nemesis, Carole Baskin doesn’t love the way Tiger King portrayed her. Baskin said in previous interviews she hoped the docuseries would advance her fight against causes she cares about (like animals), but failed to do so.

Instead, Baskin feels the series misrepresented herself, and Big Cat Rescue . Former volunteers have spoken out in Baskin’s defense to explain the way things are really run. They’ve pointed out the stark contrast between Baskin and “Joe Exotic,” stating the two are not the same, but fans have sided with one or the other.

With one more episode on the way that involves some of Tiger King’s cast, Baskin won’t be anywhere near it. She and her current husband, Howard Baskin, still run Big Cat Rescue. They’re fighting back about Tiger King’s characterization of them every chance they get, going so far as to write a post on her blog.

The case for Baskin’s missing husband, Don Lewis, is looking for new leads

With the success of Tiger King, investigators have asked the public for new leads in the disappearance of Baskin’s second husband, Don Lewis. He went missing in 1997.

Some viewers of Tiger King have taken to Maldonado-Passage’s side, agreeing that Baskin may have killed Lewis and “fed him to the tigers.” It’s no secret that she and Maldonado-Passage became the central story in Tiger King. Their longtime feud ended with Maldonado-Passage behind bars for an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill Baskin.

Maldonado-Passage is serving a 22-year sentence but says he’s ashamed of his past behavior, is over the Baskin drama, and looks forward to being a free man. However, Maldonado-Passage’s niece recently said he shouldn’t ever be released and should “rot in hell.”

Whether police find any new clues that lead to the arrest of Baskin or anyone else remains to be seen. Still, it doesn’t change her mind about ever appearing on another Tiger King-related show again.

Why Baskin won’t take part in a ‘Tiger King’ reunion

Baskin slammed Tiger King creators, calling the docuseries “salacious and sensational,” for the way they portrayed Lewis’s disappearance, hinting at her involvement. With a bonus episode on the way, don’t expect Baskin to weigh in.

“We have not been approached about a new episode and would not participate if asked,” a representative for Baskin told Entertainment Weekly.

Another person fans likely won’t see is Maldonado-Passage’s current husband, Dillon Passage. During an interview with Andy Cohen, he said no one contacted him.

“I’m not sure completely on the details,” he said. “I only spoke with one of the producers a little while about it because I was asking her. I saw an article saying there was gonna be another episode dropped and I was kind of curious.”

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness is available to stream on Netflix.
