Emmy-Award-Winning Series ‘This Is Us’ Enlists Tim Matheson To Play Mandy Moore’s TV Father

Best known for his portrayal of Eric “Otter” Stratton in National Lampoon’s Animal House, Tim Matheson has starred in numerous television shows and movies since he was 13-years-old.

In 2002, he received his first Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his performance in The West Wing. The Academy nominated the actor again the following year, but he didn’t take home the award.

This Is Us has tapped Matheson to join their award-winning series and cast for Season 4 to play Rebecca Pearson’s father, for which he could receive a third nomination and finally win it. Who is Tim Matheson, and what is his role on This Is Us?

Who is Tim Matheson?

Born Timothy Lewis Matthieson in Glendale, California, the 71-year-old actor, director, and producer started his career in 1961 at 13-years-old, starring as Roddy Miller in CBS comedy, Window on Main Street.

The following year he appeared on Leave It to Beaver, and continued to act in several television shows and movies throughout the years including Bonanza, National Lampoon’s Animal House, and To Be or Not to Be until landing award-nominated role as Vice President John Hoynes on The West Wing.

His lead roles include voicing Johnny Quest, Ronald Reagan in a television film adaptation of the novel, Killing Reagan, and Old Man Vreeke in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Matheson also has directing credits on a few episodes in popular shows including The Twilight Zone, The Good Guys, and Burn Notice.

The actor has received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his performance in The West Wing, a 2016 Critics’ Choice TV Award nomination for Killing Reagan, and won the 2018 Boston Film Festival Prize with his ensemble for The Etruscan Smile.

Tim Matheson will play Mandy Moore’s TV father

Matheson will portray Dave, Rebecca Pearson’s (Mandy Moore) father. He will appear in a flashback when Rebecca brings Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) home to meet her parents. Viewers have already met her mother (Elizabeth Perkins) and know Rebecca doesn’t associate with her because she acted in a discriminatory behavior towards Randall (Sterling K. Brown), her adopted black son.

However, viewers don’t know anything about her father or how close they were. Moore gave a few hints, saying, “Rebecca is a bit of a daddy’s girl. There are certain things that they don’t align on. But I think at the end of the day she really loves her father for who he is. He’s quite protective of her.”

It’s unclear what those “things” are that she doesn’t agree with her television father on, but it could likely be related to race as she had the same disagreements with her mother.

Who else is joining the cast?

Omar Epps (House), Nick Wechsler (Revenge), Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon a Time), Timothy Omundson (Psych), Julian Silva (Queen of the South), Auden Thornton (Bull), Bahara Golestani (Animal Kingdom), M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), and Asante Blackk and Marsha Stephanie Blake from Emmy-nominated series, When They See Us are all joining the This Is Us Season 4 cast.

While no one has confirmed which actors are playing which role and how they relate to the Big Three, there have been several unverified fan theories.
