Kathie Lee Gifford got her historic star
On April 28, Gifford received an iconic symbol of recognition in the show business industry: her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With a virtual ceremony streamed live online, Gifford was honored for her achievements throughout her career in television.
Starting out on the small screen in the 1970s, the Today Show alum appeared on commercials and the daytime soap Days of Our Lives. She also sang on the game show Name That Tune and was featured in the sitcom Hee Haw Honeys.
Gifford shot to fame when she joined forces with TV legend Regis Philbin for their morning talk show, which launched a new format in the genre. The two co-hosted Live with Regis and Kathie Lee from 1985 until 2000, when Gifford left to pursue other projects.
Taking to morning TV again in 2008 to join Hoda Kotb on Today, Gifford again struck co-host chemistry gold with her new on-air partner. Her final show was in April 2019, when Gifford relocated to Tennessee and has been working on a host of creative endeavors including songwriting and film scripts.
Hoda Kotb honored her pal and former ‘Today Show’ co-host
Gifford received plenty of love and accolades from friends and colleagues in the industry. Music icon Dolly Parton and Then Came You co-star Craig Ferguson both spoke in praise of Gifford’s talent and character. Kotb also shared of their time working together on the Today Show.
“Y’all picked well,” Kotb said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “Kathie Lee Gifford is so deserving of this star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is in a class all by herself. Kathie Lee is an original. I know because I got to sit next to her for 11 years.”
Kotb got emotional when she spoke of Gifford’s authenticity, and how she personally impacted her own life.
“We watched as she went through difficult times in her life in front of us,” Kotb explained. “We watched as she said goodbye to her dad and her dear mom in front of us. And we watched her say goodbye to her husband in front of us. … She shared her life with all of us. … She speaks her heart and her truth, she lives her faith. … She’s an American original.”
The Today anchor concluded with a special message: “You changed so many people’s lives, but in particular, you changed mine and I love you for it.”
Kathie Lee Gifford paid tribute to her fans
Gifford expressed her gratitude for her fans upon receiving the illustrious award.
“I don’t see you, but I sense you with me, because you’ve been with me all these decades in this incredible industry, and you have rewarded me in so many ways with your faith in me, your prayers for me, your love for me,” Gifford shared, according to Today.com. “I look back on it in awe and wonder that God blessed me so much to be able to make my living doing what I love to do, which is what my daddy taught me.”
Joking that she will take all of the offers that Betty White turns down, the singer/songwriter thanked Kotb, Parton, and Ferguson for their kind words and noted how the recognition truly made an impact in her life.
“I want to thank you, all of you, for this amazing award,” Gifford said. “It means a lot to me. It really does. I’d kind of given up on ever getting this, I got to be honest. But here it is!”
In her trademark humor, Gifford added, “And now people can walk all over me anytime that you want.”
