‘Today Show’s’ Al Roker Confesses His ‘Man Crush’ on This Co-Host

Today Show co-host and weather forecaster Al Roker recently returned to the morning news program after receiving surgery for a hip replacement on September 18. Now back at the news desk with his fellow co-hosts, Roker recently revealed his adoration for one of his colleagues and even put it in writing.

Making ‘the list’

Variety recently compiled a roster of 50 people for their 2019 Power of New York list. One name selected for that list was Craig Melvin, co-host of the Today Show. Melvin joined MSNBC in 2011, and was officially named co-host of the top-rated NBC morning news program last year, joining anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie.

Other names on the Power list include Kieran Culkin, Jennifer Lopez, Amy Entelis, and Michael Barbaro. Variety asked Roker if he could write a tribute to his colleague Melvin, where the meteorologist apparently had no problem finding admiring qualities about his co-host to trumpet.

Declaring his ‘man crush’

“I’m just going to come right out and say this. I have a man crush on Craig Melvin, and I don’t care who knows it,” Roker wrote for his opening in the Variety essay. He then goes on to explain why he feels so strongly. “How can you not love this guy? He’s a young Southerner who was raised by a mom who was a teacher and a dad who worked shifts at the post office in South Carolina. I love that even though he is so young, he has made his success the old-fashioned way: through hard work, coming up through local news in South Carolina, winning Emmy Awards, becoming an honored anchorman.”

Roker also brings up how Melvin won over his wife while working in the nation’s capital. “Then at the NBC station in Washington, D.C., he not only distinguished himself with his journalistic chops — he multitasked by meeting, wooing and marrying the much more talented sportscaster Lindsay Czarniak.”

The Today weatherman went on to praise Melvin as a newsman, noting his hard-hitting stories that were handled with professionalism and compassion. “I have watched with respect and admiration that in the short time since Craig joined NBC News and MSNBC, he’s covered everything from the Olympics to mass shootings to presidential conventions,” Roker wrote. “Craig’s interviewed former presidents, secretaries of state, ambassadors and school-kids, all with the same intelligence, honesty and integrity.”

Melvin the man

Roker recalled a trip he took with Melvin where he got to see first-hand how the journalist multitasks between his job and his family. “Last year, while Craig and I were on a road trip, I got to witness him juggle his professional life — while we were shooting nonstop — and his personal life, caring for his dad and one of his brothers and checking in at home fretting over his kids. I knew then just how special this guy is,” Roker noted.

He went on to add a story about Melvin’s son’s first school day, where the newsman put family before work to make sure he didn’t miss the monumental event. “In September, who else but Craig Melvin takes off from his Today Show duties to put his 5-year-old son on the school bus for the first day of school, then surreptitiously follows said bus ’til it gets to school and sees his little man safely inside?” Roker gushed.

He ended his tribute with his typical teddy bear humor, while also putting out a warning to anyone else who may be crushing on Melvin. “Vocally, he is the newsman’s version of Lou Rawls and one good-looking, sweet piece of man candy,” Roker wrote of Melvin, concluding with, “OK, I’m shallow. Sue me!! So, yes, I am crushing on Craig Melvin. He’s mine. And yeah, I’m talking to you, Mike Tirico. Back off!!”
