‘Today Show’s’ Jenna Bush Hager Shared a Note From Co-Host Hoda Kotb That Made Her Cry
The Today Show has had quite the baby boom this year, with anchor Hoda Kotb adopting her second daughter, Hope Katherine, in April, and Jenna Bush Hager announcing that she’s expecting her third child, a baby boy. Most recently, meteorologist Dylan Dreyer announced that she is due with a baby boy, her second child, in January. Recently, a baby shower was given for Hager by her friends and co-workers, including Kotb who showed up while on maternity leave.
Being sensitive to others with her news
Hager was very careful when she found out that she was pregnant with her third child since there were other women in her life who also wanted to be moms, but were having a hard time conceiving. “When I had that conversation with Hoda, because I knew she wanted this baby, I called my mom,” Hager said according to People, noting that her recently married twin sister Barbara was trying to get pregnant.
“I said, ‘Barbara’ — who just got married — ‘and Hoda, they want these babies, and I have this guilt.’ And my mom said, ‘Everybody gets their babies when they’re supposed to.’ My mom and her mom before her struggled with infertility forever, and so I thought that was a beautiful thing to say,” Hager shared. “I don’t take this lightly. I know how blessed and lucky I am. It’s an amazing gift.”
At the time, Dreyer was also struggling with infertility issues. “My sadness doesn’t take away from anyone else’s happiness, and my sadness isn’t minimized because someone else has a sadder situation,” Dreyer said at the time according to People, shortly before finding out the happy news that she was expecting.
With Hager revealing her pregnancy just after Kotb announced the arrival of her second daughter, viewers may have been wondering who would be manning the desk at Today with Hoda and Jenna, where Hager had just replaced former co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. “Is the timing ideal? Not really. We are launching something new and I’ll be taking maternity leave this fall. But it’s not about that,” Hager told People in May.
She went on to say that her co-workers have been incredibly supportive. “There was no hesitation when I told anybody at work. It is a beautiful journey for you and your family. And I know they feel the same way for Hoda,” Hager said. “These decisions about expanding our families are personal … our work is wonderful and I’m thrilled with how our show is going. But it’s really forward thinking.”
Hager went on to share her excitement at having a newborn at the same time as her co-host. “And the fact that Hoda and I get to start this journey together [with babies] who will be months apart and we get to do the show together, we are creating these new things together. New lives, and a new show as a team,” she said.
On Wednesday, Hager shared a note on-air that was given to her by Kotb. After reading just the first sentence, Hager got emotional. “Jenna, you represent everything I love,” the note read, according to Today. “Your friends are lucky, your children luckier. Three good people in the world thanks to you and Hank. Maybe they will change the world.”
Hager went on to describe her baby shower that was given the day before at Taco Dumbo in New York City. “I walked in, and just to hug somebody who you love so much who has the joy of motherhood all over her, you could feel it,” Hager said of Kotb to Willie Geist, host of Sunday Today who was filling in for Kotb. “She is so happy. And to see somebody you love so happy, there’s really no better feeling.”
According to Today, many of Hager’s co-workers were in attendance at the event, including co-anchor Sheinelle Jones. “I really did leave full of tacos, which is one of my favorite feelings, but also full of such gratitude because I don’t think everybody gets to work in a place and feel as good as I do,” Hager said.
Sounds like viewers will be getting a glimpse of that bundle of joy very soon!
