‘Today’: Update on Savannah Guthrie After Her Retinal Surgery
As much as Today anchor Savannah Guthrie and her doctors were hoping to avoid surgery, in the end, it was needed after all to repair the morning show host’s torn retina. Her right eye was injured after a run-in with her son’s toy train.
Find out how the 47-year-old is doing and when she’s expected back.
Guthrie explained towards the end of November that her torn retina was the result of her three-year-old son, Charley, accidentally hitting her right eye with a toy train.
She eventually realized the injury was worse than she’d thought and took a couple of days off from the show and called in on the air to explain what was causing her absence that day.
“I got hit … Charley threw a toy train right at my eye and it tore my retina,” Guthrie explained.
“It happened last week, actually, and then I lost my vision in my right eye about 24 hours later and then it turned out to be kind of serious. They were afraid my retina was detached.”
“The vision is getting better every day, but I’m still blurry,” Guthrie told her co-anchors on Today in November. “Right now it’s like having one contact (lens) in and (one) out. When it first started though, it was like a complete blur. I couldn’t have seen anything.”
She almost missed the Thanksgiving Day Parade, but trooper that she is, she showed up with glasses and a smile for the crowds.
Guthrie was told at first that laser treatment was enough
Her doctors finally decided surgery was indeed needed. At first, they had hoped she could avoid going under the knife, using laser treatments for her torn retina.
Guthrie had five laser treatments, which were not helping to fix the severity of her retina’s condition. And so, she needed surgery after all.
“It turned out to be kind of serious. They were afraid my retina would detach,” she explained on the Today show. “They told me to just take it easy and they’ve been doing a bunch of laser procedures to avoid having to do the whole surgery.”
She added, “It was so blurry from — not to get too gross — but there was so much blood in my eye that it completely blocked my vision.”
Guthrie is recovering after surgery
This morning on Today, fellow anchor Craig Melvin is filling in for Guthrie, saying “Savannah’s had her eye surgery. She’s in good spirits, good sense of humor.”
Kotb said, “She’s got her kids around her, her hubby around her, so she’s A-ok.”
Melvin and Kotb updated viewers, saying Guthrie is on the mend after eye surgery. “Sending out our good wishes to our girl, Savannah,” Kotb said.
Showing viewers a new photo of her co-anchor in which Guthrie has her head down and hunched over what looks like a pillow, Kotb said, “Savannah has to stay immobile…for the next…we’ll wait and see.”
It doesn’t look comfortable, but Guthrie will have to stay very still in order to recover from her surgery. How long she’ll be out remains to be seen.
With all the support and good wishes surrounding the Today host, she’ll be back on the air before long!
