Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen or heard about Taylor Swift’s new music video for her latest single “You Need To Calm Down.” Whether you love the video or absolutely hate it, it certainly marks a new era for the artist, whose upcoming album, Lover, debuts in August. The video is filled with famous faces, including Swift’s ex-rival Katy Perry, and has already amassed over 44.7 million views on YouTube.
In addition to writing the lyrics and coming up with the concept for the video, Swift also is an executive producer on the video. But surprisingly, she shares this title with another artist, former American Idol contestant, Todrick Hall. But what’s the real reason Swift named Hall as a co-executive producer?
Before they ever produced videos together, Swift and Hall shared an incredibly close bond. The friendship between the pair actually spans back to 2015. It started when Hall posted himself singing a mash-up of several of Swift’s most iconic hits. It somehow reached the “22” singer and she was immediately blown away. Taking to her Twitter page, she shared the video with the caption “I honestly can’t believe what I just saw. The amount of talent in one person has me speechless. I love Todrick Hall.”
Of course, Hall was quick to fire back a message of gratitude to the 10-time GRAMMY winner. “Night=MADE, Thank you so much! You have no idea how you’ve just made my entire night” the former American Idol contestant gushed in a tweet of his own. After the back and forth Twitter exchange, the pair made plans to meet up. Swift extended an invitation for Hall to visit her backstage at her 1989 concert, From there, the two went on to form a fast friendship, which fans refer to as Taydrick.
You Need To Calm Down
Naturally, when Swift had the idea for “You Need To Calm Down”, she tapped her close friend to be in the music video. But it seemed that 34-year-old Hall went above and beyond the call of duty. Rather than just appearing in the video, he offered ideas and suggestions, and used his contacts and connects to enhance Swift’s original vision.
Behind the scenes
In the behind the scenes footage for the video, Swift gushes about how instrumental Hall has been in helping to produce the video. “My friend Todrick is one of those people who is very generous with his effort and time, he would never ask for credit when he deserves it. He has put so much into this video, whether it was casting or ideas or fashion, and you know, logistics. He’s basically booked half of this video. So I’m going to ask him to be co-executive producer of this video in this card” the 29-year-old songstress says.
Swift then hand-delivered the card to him and read it aloud, promposal style. “Todrick my dearest partner-in-crime, will you be my co-executive producer on this music video” the “Red” singer proclaims. Hall, of course, is thrilled by the invitation and immediately accepts. “Girl yes, honey shut up! Taylor, oh my God!” Hall exclaims overjoyed.
We love giving credit where credit is due and we’re happy to see that Swift is also of that mindset. It’s great that she’s using her incredible fame and clout to help boost the career of someone who has been consistently hustling for years. We’re sure that the executive producer credit will help open doors for Hall and his ever-expanding career. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next.
