Seven years after the release of Angels & Demons, audiences are about to get another Robert Langdon adventure. Tom Hanks returns to his role as the renowned professor in Inferno, the third adaptation of the bestselling series penned by Dan Brown. With the movie set to hit theaters this fall, here’s everything we know about the threequel so far.
1. Robert Langdon will have a new partner in crime
Hanks will reprise his role as the Harvard University professor of symbology, Robert Langdon. In Inferno, Langdon once again finds himself the target of a major manhunt. Luckily, he’ll have some assistance saving himself and the rest of the world.
This time around, he’ll be getting help from Dr. Sienna Brooks, played by Felicity Jones. Brooks will aid an amnesia-stricken Langdon in recovering his memories so that he can battle those who are targeting him. The studio recently released its first look of the film with a brief teaser, seen above.
2. It centers on the possibility of an impending global plague
After waking up in Florence, Italy, with no recollection of how he got there or what happened in the last few days, Langdonmust try to jog his memory to regain his freedom and save the world. Teaming up with Dr. Brooks, the two must race against the clock to foil a deadly global plot by a mad scientist obsessed with Dante’s vision of hell.
3. The supporting cast
Ben Foster will play the main villain, Bertrand Zobrist, a transhumanist scientist, who is intent on solving the world’s overpopulation problems by using evil methods. Helping him in his warped mission is Harry “The Provost” Sims (Irrfan Khan), the head of The Consortium.
Meanwhile, Sidse Babett Knudsen is on board to play Elizabeth Sinskey, head of the World Health Organization. Omar Sy will portray Christoph Bruder, the head of the SRS team tasked with finding Langdon after he goes missing. Ana Ularu also co-stars as Vayentha, The Consortium’s agent in Florence who has orders to follow Langdon.
4. Expect plenty more European landmarks
In the last two films, Langdon had to decode historical arcana in various iconic locations across Europe in order to stop the destruction of humanity. We can expect plenty more globe trotting in Inferno, which filmed in various locations across Italy and Budapest.
5. Ron Howard will return to direct
Howard, who helmed both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, will be back to direct the third installment of the franchise. He will be directing off a screenplay penned by David Koepp. Howard will also produce alongside Brian Grazer, Michael De Luca, and Andrea Giannetti.
Inferno is set to hit theaters on October 14, 2016.
