Tom Holland May Have Dropped a Big ‘Avengers 4’ Spoiler Months Ago

It looks like Tom Holland might have once again inadvertently revealed a Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler, with a recently-resurfaced interview having major implications for Avengers 4.

During the Avengers: Infinity War press tour, Tom Holland was often paired with Benedict Cumberbatch for interviews. In one conducted with Access, which Emergency Awesome recently redirected fans’ attention to, Holland points out that Cumberbatch’s dialogue tends to be a mouthful.

“[Cumberbatch] has the most difficult lines, though,” Holland said in this April interview. “He has to talk about so much Quantum Realm stuff. I just have to talk about, ‘Yeah, man, that’s awesome.'”

Nobody really paid that much attention to this quote at the time, especially because we hadn’t seen Infinity War yet. But now, it seems clear that Holland was referring to Avengers 4 since Doctor Strange never talks about the Quantum Realm in Infinity War. When this interview took place, Holland had already filmed both Infinity War and Avengers 4, so it would make sense for him to confuse the two.

This is a pretty big deal for a number of reasons. For one, fans for months have been speculating that the Quantum Realm will be the key to defeating Thanos and reversing his snap. The idea is that since this realm exists outside of space and time, it will somehow open the door to time travel or travel to alternate dimensions, which our heroes will take advantage of in Avengers 4.

This seems to be the implication of the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credits scene. At the end of that film (spoiler alert!), Ant-Man becomes trapped in the Quantum Realm; moments earlier, Janet van Dyne had warned him not to get sucked into a “time vortex.” That sure sounds like there’s a way to time travel using the Quantum Realm and that Ant-Man, having no other way of escaping after his friends disappeared, will go into that vortex in Avengers 4.

So if the Quantum Realm is constantly being discussed in Avengers 4, as Holland is suggesting, this would seem to confirm the theories that it’s a big part of resolving the conflict.

The Quantum Realm

There’s another reason Holland’s quote is significant, though: Doctor Strange was one of the people who disappeared when Thanos snapped his fingers. Yet if he has a lot of dialogue about the Quantum Realm, that makes it sound like he’s a part of the main action in the movie or that, at the very least, he doesn’t just have minimal screen time at the end after everyone has returned to life.

Last July, Just Jared posted some leaked photos of a scene between Doctor Strange and Ant-Man that was thought to be for Avengers: Infinity War but didn’t end up appearing in that film. So perhaps this scene was for Avengers 4; maybe Ant-Man gets some information about the Quantum Realm through Doctor Strange via time travel.

But that probably isn’t what Holland is talking about. After all, it’s well known that Marvel doesn’t share the full scripts with Holland, and he even said in this very same interview with Access that his copies of the scripts are largely blacked out. So he wouldn’t know about a scene between Doctor Strange and Ant-Man that he isn’t even in. Rather, Holland’s quote implies that not only does Doctor Strange discuss the Quantum Realm in Avengers 4, but he does so while Spider-Man is around.

Maybe, then, the Avengers time travel back to some of the events of Infinity War in Avengers 4, and that’s when Strange talks about the Quantum Realm. Perhaps they travel to an alternate universe version of the battle on Titan. Or maybe those who disappeared in the snap actually ended up in an alternate dimension, and we’ll follow both the characters who were spared and the characters who were snapped in Avengers 4.

Technically, it’s possible that there was originally a scene in Infinity War where Doctor Strange talked about the Quantum Realm, but it got cut, and that’s what Holland is referring to. But Holland’s quote clearly implies that Strange talks about the Quantum Realm at least a few times rather than just in one scene, and there isn’t really any clear reason he would be doing so in Infinity War.

Because Infinity War and Avengers 4 were filmed back to back, a lot of the actors ended up saying things on the Infinity War press tour that they probably didn’t realize were such big spoilers for Avengers 4. This included Gwyneth Paltrow saying that Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are married and have a kid, and Sebastian Stan saying he was in a scene with Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer.
