Tom Holland Just Made a Quiet But Bold Statement on Instagram After News of Spider-Man Leaving MCU

From Tobey Maguire to Andrew Garfield and now to Tom Holland, there have been a number of incredible stars who’ve taken on the role of Spider-Man over the years. And while Holland had big shoes to fill, he’s proven to be one of the best ever. Not only has the 23-year-old taken on the role more than any other star in the past, but he’s fallen in love with the character and brought a fresh spin on what could’ve been a tired classic.

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans absolutely love that Holland entered their movie realm and made appearances in mega-hits like Endgame. But some heartbreaking news just made its rounds regarding the fate of Spider-Man in the movie world. Here’s what’s going on and how Holland may have just made a bold statement on Instagram without saying anything at all.

Disney and Sony are ending their partnership with Spider-Man

While Spider-Man fits in perfectly with the rest of the Avengers, it seems the congregation of superheroes has a short lifespan. Entertainment Weekly explains that Disney and Sony were ending their partnership with the Spider-Man films due to a disagreement over finances. To bring it back to the beginning, Sony is the original owner of the Spider-Man films. Years ago, Kevin Feige, the president for Marvel Studios, agreed to help Sony with producing their solo Spider-Man films, the publication explains. But after the release of Far From Home, Disney reportedly wanted to co-finance on any future Spider-Man releases. Sony, however, wanted their deal to remain the same.

Since a deal hasn’t been reached (so far), this means Holland’s Spider-Man will not make any further appearances in MCU movies, and MCU characters also won’t be in any future Spider-Man films. Feige doesn’t have any regrets, however. As he told EW, “It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”

Tom Holland reportedly unfollowed Sony on Instagram

While this may not have been what Holland had in mind for Spider-Man moving forward, he still told Entertainment Weekly that he’s excited about the future. “It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life,” he said. Oddly enough, it seems he may have more conflicted feelings about it than he let on. According to Heroic Hollywood, Holland made the bold move of unfollowing Sony on Instagram after the news broke that they’d be parting with Disney over the franchise.

MCU Cosmic author Jeremy Conrad was seemingly the first to notice, and he took to Twitter to share his thoughts. Conrad also added that Holland is still following Marvel Studios, however.

Did Holland really unfollow Sony, even with more Spider-Man films in the pipeline? Or is it possible he never followed them to begin with and now everyone’s noticing? It’s hard to tell.

Holland also added photos of him and Robert Downey Jr. amidst the chaos

We did it Mr Stark!

Despite whatever Instagram drama may be occurring in the background, Holland posted sweet photos of him and Robert Downey Jr. that fans are already feeling nostalgic over. Since Downey Jr. played Tony Stark (and Peter Parker’s mentor), the two characters won’t be in each other’s films unless Sony and Disney can come to an agreement.

“We did it Mr. Stark!” Holland captioned his post. And fans are showing their support, as one commented, “honestly it’s really sweet that he hung out with robert after the news came out, they must mean a lot to each other and i really love their friendship [sic].” And others mentioned they’re hoping either Sony or Disney will change their minds and bring these two together in another film in the future.

What will be the fate of Spider-Man now? We’ll have to wait and see.
