Tom Holland Was Drunk During This Pivotal ‘Spider-Man’ Moment
When Tom Holland stepped into Peter Parker’s shoes in the dazzling 2017 film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, fans were delighted. We’d recently seen the Queens-born superhero portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, the British-born actor seemed like the absolute perfect fit for the teenage Parker, trying to find his footing in the world.
Fans were also delighted that Sony and Marvel came to an agreement, so Spider-Man could be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, showing up in films including Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.
But Holland’s position in the MCU nearly ended in late summer 2019 when talks between Sony and Marvel broke down. Luckily, despite being a tad inebriated, Holland was able to save the day.
This is why Spider-Man was nearly ousted from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
When Holland’s Spider-Man was introduced amid Phase 3 of the MCU, Sony and Disney came out with a tenuous agreement to share the character and its profits. However, when Disney (Marvel’s parent company) merged with Fox earlier this year, things fell apart quickly.
Sony and Disney had to come up with a new agreement for Spider-Man, and unfortunately, it did not go smoothly.
“Sources maintain that [Marvel Studios President Kevin] Feige’s exit was about money,” Deadline reported at the time. “It was about Disney seeking the 50/50 co-fi stake … as the price for Marvel and Feige’s continued guiding hand that resulted in the delivery of Sony’s biggest grossing film ever. Sony declined to meet those terms.”
Disney and Sony eventually came to agreement about Spider-Man
Just when fans thought all hope was lost, Disney and Sony announced in September that Marvel will produce Holland’s third Spider-Man film.
“We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans,” Robert Lawson, Sony Pictures chief communications officer, said in a statement. “We are delighted to be moving forward together.”
At the time, the new agreement seemingly came out of the blue. But it looks like a drunken phone call from Holland might have helped.
Tom Holland was drunk when he helped save Spider-Man
Though he maintained an air of cool when all of this was going down, Holland was falling apart behind the scenes like the rest of us. Apparently, Holland got the news that Spider-Man would be exiting the MCU at the absolute worst time.
“We were at D23, which is the big Disney convention, and the news had come out, and I was obviously devastated,” the 23-year-old explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I was really upset. All my Marvel friends were there, and they were taking like Marvel pictures, and I was not allowed to be in them. It was awful.”
Still, Holland maintained his professionalism and sent Disney CEO Bob Iger a thank you email. A few days later while he was at a pub with his family, he got a mysterious phone call.
“I’m like three pints in, right? Haven’t eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number,” he explained. “I have a feeling. I think this is Bob Iger. But I’m drunk. … I weeped. No, I didn’t weep. … I did, yeah. I was really emotional because I felt like it was all coming to an end.”
And this drunken declaration of how much Holland loved his character might have been the fuel the negotiations needed to keep him in the MCU.
