Tom Holland On Why His Spider-Man Is ‘More Interesting’ Than Tobey Maguire’s Portrayal

Everyone knows the story of Spider-Man at this point, especially the Peter Parker version. Two of the actors who have played the character, Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland, have used much of the same source material to interpret him, but there are some notable differences. Here’s one reason that Holland prefers his own version of Peter Parker.

Tobey Maguire originated the role of Peter Parker on the big screen

It’s been almost 20 years since Maguire kicked off Sony’s first round of Spider-Man films. In them, Maguire portrayed Peter Parker, who goes from recent high school grad to 20-something tasked with saving the world as Spider-Man after he’s bitten by a radioactive spider.

But you know the story. In fact, you know it very well, because, after three films starring Maguire, the entire thing was rebooted and kicked off again for two more flicks, this time starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. His uncle dies, he becomes Spider-Man, there’s a love interest and some villains… you get the gist.

Tom Holland’s version of the character is the current one

As they say, the third time’s the charm. This is the way that many feel about the newest Peter Parker, played by Holland. Things played out a bit differently this time: In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter was introduced as a side character in Captain America: Civil War before getting his own film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. And they skipped over the origin story involving Uncle Ben.

Peter Parker grows in very different ways in the Sony-Marvel projects. He starts off as a high school student tackling villains close to home, before joining back up with the Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. By the time we get to Spider-Man: Far From Home, he’s much more adept at handling global disasters.

As noted, there are quite a few differences between the two Peter Parkers. Some of these differences are technical. In a recent GQ interview, Holland answered a question from a fan who was curious about where Spider-Man’s webbing comes from, as it’s not the same for both.

“In Tobey’s [films], it comes out of his wrists. He must have, like, little holes in his wrists, which is kind of gross,” said Holland. “And in my [films], we have web shooters which Tony Stark made for him. And he presses a little button and it sprays out of his wrist.”

What Holland likes about his younger Peter Parker

While the above commentary didn’t really offer up any opinions, other critiques comparing the two were a bit more personal. Another fan called Holland’s character “weaker, naive, and foolish” in comparison to Maguire’s more mature take. Holland, always on his best behavior, replied kindly to this, explaining the decision.

“Because it makes me more interesting, I guess? It gives me more room to grow. If you start out a badass, there’s nowhere to go, you know?” Holland, of course, has nothing but nice things to say about Maguire’s take, adding, “I love Tobey’s movies. They changed my life growing up.” So whether you prefer Maguire’s OG Spidey or Holland’s newer one, there are plenty of reasons to appreciate both.
