The official trailer for the Tomb Raider reboot is out, and it promises action-packed adventures at sea and on land for a 21-old Laura Croft. What better choice to play the heroine than Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander, who grew up playing the “Tomb Raider” video games?
“I grew up playing the games, and I was thrilled when I was 15 and I saw the films with Angelina Jolie,” Vikander told The Hollywood Reporter recently at the Toronto International Film Festival. “She really made her into an icon with those films.”
Jolie starred in the franchise’s first two films, Tomb Raider (2001) and The Cradle of Life (2003). The films were based on an action-adventure video game series featuring Croft, a fictional British archaeologist, who travels the world retrieving lost artifacts from dangerous tombs and ruins. Comics and novels have also been based on the video game.
In the new trailer for the prequel, Croft, a 21-year-old bike courier, heads to a fabled tomb on a mythical island to try and solve the mystery of her father’s death – with hopes he actually may still be alive. The new film, adapted from the 2013 video game, will hit theaters March 16, 2018.
In developing 21-year-old Croft’s character, certain questions were asked, Vikander told Empire. “What are the famous traits of this person? How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?” One difference between the younger Croft’s story and that of the older Croft is the 21-year-old is in search of her father rather than priceless artifacts.
Croft at 21 has “all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits,” Vikander told EW. “But we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet … This is the beginning.”
Vikander’s background as a dancer likely helped her in filming some of the strenuous action scenes in Tomb Raider. She told EW of spending two days filming in a tank, marking her 16th total day “being fully drenched or submerged in the water.
Photos of Vikander filming some of the movie’s action scenes were leaked on Twitter in February.

For her 2016 role in The Danish Girl, Vikander won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Other films the 28-year-old has appeared in include Tulip Fever (2017), Jason Bourne (2016), and Anna Karenina (2012). Other than Tomb Raider, another movie Vikander plays in which will release in 2018 is Freak Shift.
