‘Toy Story 4’: Fans are Already Getting Emotional
Pixar just released the first official full-length trailer for Toy Story 4 and long-time Toy Story fans reacted in a big way. The trailer features all of Andy’s old pals: Woody, Buzz, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Rex, Slinky, Hamm, Bo Peep, and one new character named Forky. Forky is a spork with two loose googly eyes and pipe cleaners as arms. He’s unsteady and going through an existential crisis.
“I am not a toy. I was made for soup, salad, maybe chili, and then the trash!”
Fans, immediately, deemed him relatable.
Could he be the new favorite?
We’ll have to wait and see. Whatever Forky’s going through seems to be central to the latest Toy Story plot.
“The world of ‘Toy Story’ is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose,” director Josh Cooley told Entertainment Weekly. “A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfill his purpose as a spork, but now has a new toy purpose thrust upon him.”
The trailer sets the scene: Forky feels he was never meant to be played with–he was meant to be used as a tool–so he escapes and Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) chases after him to bring him back to Bonnie (Forky’s all-mighty creator). Amidst the chase, Woody’s eyes are opened to what life would be like without a single child to answer to. Adventure ensues.
‘Toy Story’ fan reactions
The first Toy Story came out in 1995. That’s a 24-year-old franchise, so the kids that grew up loving these movies are well into adulthood. But that’s not stopping these devout fans from watching (and sobbing at) Toy Story 4 along with a theater full of children.
Some franchise fans are preparing themselves for an onslaught of emotions.
What really hammered the nail in the emotional coffin was when the trailer started playing God Only Knows.
“Putting “God Only Knows” in the Toy Story 4 trailer is emotional terrorism,” writes one Twitter user.
Some fans are commenting on how far animation technology has come.
Andy, in particular, is almost unrecognizeable.
Will Woody convince Forky to be a toy for Bonnie even though it’s not his true purpose? Will Woody even want to return to Bonnie now that he sees what the big wide world has to offer him? We’ll find out June 21.
