Amy Schumer is about to make the leap from TV comedy actress to movie star. The trailer for Schumer’s highly anticipated, upcoming film, Trainwreck, has just been released and from the looks of it, the stand-up comedian may be on the verge of becoming Hollywood’s new favorite funny leading lady.
Directed by Judd Apatow, the movie stars the actress as a men’s magazine writer, who was taught by her dad at an early age that monogamy isn’t “realistic.” Now in her 30s, she still has no interest in maintaining a committed relationship. Instead, she continues to unapologetically bounce from guy to guy on various one-night stands. But her stance on love finally begins to change after she meets a sports doctor (played by Bill Hader) while on assignment from her magazine. In addition to starring in the film, Schumer also penned the script.
The trailer makes it clear from the get-go that Schumer’s character, also named Amy, isn’t your typical love-struck rom-com female lead. As the movie’s title implies, she’s a little bit of a mess and seems to constantly be in varying degrees of a hangover. What makes her stand out, though, is that she clearly isn’t ashamed of the fact that she may be having too much fun. As she says in a voiceover in the trailer, “I’m just a modern chick who does what she wants.” Later, the clip cuts to a first date scene and she adds, “Last week, it was this guy.”
As is usually the case in Apatow-directed movies, the film boasts an amazing ensemble cast, chock-full of both comedians and some more unexpected names. Aside from Schumer and Hader, Trainwreck also co-stars Tilda Swinton, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, Mike Birbiglia, Exra Miller, John Cena, and Vanessa Bayer, among others.
The movie will also reportedly feature a number of celebrity cameos. Though specific details regarding these have been kept mostly under wraps, the trailer did reveal one particularly funny appearance from a big surprise name: LeBron James. The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar plays a client of Hader’s doctor character, who apparently loves Downtown Abbey.
Up until now, Schumer has been best known for her work on the small screen. She writes and stars in Comedy Central’s sketch comedy TV series, Inside Amy Schumer. The show, which premiered in 2013, is currently set to kick off its third season later this year. Though the comedian has also held minor film roles in the past, as in the 2012 flicks Price Check and Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, Trainwreck marks her first lead role in a feature film.
The movie, which was first announced in 2013, has garnered plenty of buzz in the lead-up to its premiere – in large part due to its seemingly well-matched creative team in Schumer and Apatow. With Hader and so many other well-known names also in the mix, Trainwreck sees to have all the makings of a summer comedy hit. We’ll have to stay tuned to see if it delivers at the box office.
The movie is set to hit theaters on July 17.
