’90 Day Fiancé’: Why Avery Mills Says ‘People Want to Break Me’

19-year-old Avery Mills, from Columbus, Ohio, married her Syrian love Omar Albakour on this past season of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days.

These days, Mills and Albakour are still together, although it’s unclear where exactly they live or what their visa status is. One thing that is clear is that the 90 Day Fiancé star has no problem defending herself against social media detractors and critics. She recently took to Instagram and Twitter to stand up for herself.

Mills had both supporters and critics among ’90 Day Fiancé’ fans

Mills sparked both support and controversy from fans during the season. Her conversion to Islam made some viewers wonder if she was moving too fast, while other 90 Day Fiancé fans saw her as sincere.

She also struggled to tell her mother, Teri, that she might have to move to Syria or another country to be with Albakour because of the Syrian travel ban to the U.S. Mills also spoke out about criticism she had received over her decision to wear the hijab.

Finally, Mills clashed with co-star Angela Deem on the 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days Tell-All. Angela Deem defended Darcey Silva’s ex, Jesse Meester, from criticism by Mills, as well as from fellow cast members Rebecca Parrott and Tim Malcolm. Malcolm, Parrott, and Mills all claimed that Deem had gotten aggressive in footage not shown by TLC.

The ’90 Day Fiancé’ star said she was taking a social media break

On her Instagram stories on Nov. 11, Mills said she had dealt with the aftermath of appearing on the wildly popular TLC show for long enough and would no longer put up with rude comments.

“Every time I do a live to talk to my followers and the people that support our journey it gets posted to some 90 Day Fiancé page where people just talk trash (bc they are adults and that’s what being a mature adult [consists] of so I’m no longer doing them,” Mills wrote.

The 90 Day Fiancé star elaborated on her decision in a second post, writing, “To save my mental health I’m not going to be as present on social media because at the end of the day people WANT to break me and I won’t give them what THEY want.”

Mills added that she was confident in her marriage and the future she had with Albakour: “I’m a young girl and Omar’s a young guy and we have our whole [lives] ahead of us to do big things and prove people wrong.”

The 19-year-old also defended herself on Twitter

Unlike many of the other 90 Day Fiancé stars, Mills has directly addressed many of her critics on social media, both during and after the season. This is possibly partly due to her age, as she likely grew up with social media as a bigger part of her life than some of her co-stars.

When popular 90 Day Fiancé blogger John Yates posted screenshots of Mills’ Instagram story about taking a social media break, 90 Day Fiancé viewers were quick to criticize her.

But Mills clapped back, writing, “Okay stop acting like you know me you know truly not one thing about me, you don’t my character you only know what was portrayed in the show if you don’t like me don’t worry about me it’s as simple as that.”

Twitter users argued that she should simply scroll past and ignore negative comments, but Mills said she wanted to stand up for herself due to a painful history at school.

“I think people don’t expect us to respond Bc they forget we are just normal people,” she replied to one viewer. “I have feelings and truly care about others feelings too. As much as some people think I shouldn’t stand up for myself I used to get bullied as a kid so I learned to stick up for myself.”

Omar and Avery seem to be going strong

Despite some difficulties with other cast members and on social media, Avery and Omar seem to be going strong in their relationship.

Some 90 Day Fiancé fans were skeptical about whether the two cast members would make it work, given their cultural differences, the distance between them, potential visa troubles, and the fact that they married the very first time they met in person.

However, the 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days couple seems to be doing well. Avery recently shared a sweet story about her romance with her husband.

“Roses are my thing,” she wrote on Instagram. “Before I met Omar in Lebanon I met Omar’s sister and brother in New Jersey. I needed to get the [family’s] approval, when I landed in Jersey and got off my plane both of Omar’s nieces were holding a bouquet of flowers and they said ‘these are from Omar.'”

She added, “Ever since then Omar goes out of his way to always have a rose/roses for me.”

The young couple also runs an online shop together, Albakour Kouture, where they sell jewelry and other specialty items. It’s unclear as to where in the world they currently live, whether it’s Syria, Lebanon, or otherwise. But the pair frequently posts romantic photos together from around the world.
