‘Below Deck Med’: Why Does Captain Sandy Think Travis Made the Snarky Trash Comment?

Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck Mediterranean probably couldn’t believe her ears when deckhand Travis Michalzik responded to her in a snarky manner.

Third stew Anastasia Surmava¬†was helping chef Ben Robinson clean up after dinner and needed the trash to be taken out. Instead of taking it out herself, she radioed for the deck crew to handle it. When no one responded, Yawn got involved. “Go, please grab Ben’s garbage,” Yawn reiterated.

Since Michalzik was the only one available, he responded but made a snarky comment. “Oh will prioritize interior stuff, coming in,” he said curtly. Yawn wasn’t going to let that go and shot back immediately at Michalzik. “Yes, that’s right, you prioritize the f**king garbage from the galley,” she responded. “Don’t piss me off.” While Yawn says the comment was inexcusable, she now understands why he was being so sarcastic. Plus if she’d known the state he was in, could have offered him a very simple solution.

Instead of being sarcastic, ask for a break

Yawn and chief stew Hannah Ferrier offered their views on the situation when they appeared on the Below Deck Mediterranean After Show. In the scene, Yawn told Michalzik to check his attitude too. Meanwhile, he continued to grump about it under his breath. Bottom line, “You never talk to me like that,” Yawn said shaking her head. “That pisses me off. Like. It’s not going to happen.”

Although Yawn was frustrated with Michalzik she now realizes he was extremely tired. “But if you are that exhausted, or you feel as though you aren’t being led correctly, thats when you go, ‘I just need a break.'”

She adds that she doesn’t always see everything either. Both Yawn and Captain Lee Rosbach from Below Deck have remarked in the past they don’t get to see a lot of the crew drama below deck. If she knew how tired he was she would have happily given Michalzik a break.

Yawn was unhappy with more than one crew member

If Yawn knew how exhausted Michalzik was she would have given him some time to rest and had Surmava take out the garbage. Ferrier piped in that when she’s off charter, she always just takes out the garbage herself. But, “If I’m on charter, it’s very different,” she says coming in to defend her third stew. “I won’t go near the garbage because that’s disrespectful to the guests. I don’t think I should be smelling of garbage and being this close to them an serving.”

While Yawn agrees, she still has an issue with this situation. “In that particular case [Surmava] didn’t have a lot going on,” Yawn remarked.
“She could have carried that bag to the bow and washed her hands.”

Yawn adds that sometimes interior has a knee jerk reaction to bringing in deckhands for help. “Anastasia could have taken her garbage out,” Yawn said. “That’s where she was lazy.”
