‘Bringing Up Bates’: Alyssa Webster Undergoes Heart Surgery
Amid the joy of weddings, potential courtships and bringing new babies into the world, the Bates family just dealt with a scary medical ordeal. Alyssa Webster, the sixth child of Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, recently underwent heart surgery. According to an Instagram post by Alyssa’s husband, John Webster, the procedure went well and Alyssa is resting comfortably, but it seems like there has been some medical drama for the 24-year-old mother of three in recent months.
What type of surgery did Alyssa Webster have?
John Webster, on Alyssa’s Instagram page, shared that his wife underwent an electrophysiology study. During the procedure, a doctor tests the electrical activity of the heart to locate where an arrhythmia is originating from, according to the American Heart Association. Once the doctor discovered the arrhythmia, he apparently ablated the area to prevent the arrhythmia from reoccurring.
According to John, Alyssa has a 50% chance of having symptoms return, but they are taking a wait-and-see approach. According to the Instagram post, if symptoms don’t reoccur within one month, it is likely they will not return. Reddit users shared their experience with similar surgeries.
What caused her medical problem?
According to John’s Instagram post, Alyssa has been suffering from rapid heartbeats for several months. The couple has visited several doctors since Alyssa first noticed the problem. Finally landing in the office of a specialist who diagnosed the Tennessee-native with supraventricular tachycardia; Alyssa and John decided to treat the problem with surgery.
According to the Mayo Clinic, supraventricular tachycardia or SVT is a rapid or abnormal heartbeat that may come and go. According to the medical source, it can be caused by a number of factors, including smoking, stress and even pregnancy. For some patients, it resolves on its own, but for others, medical intervention is necessary to return the heart to its normal rhythm.
Fans are wishing Alyssa well
While the Bates family is no stranger to trolls, fans are rallying around the ultra-conservative Christian mother as she recovers from surgery. Well-wishers piled into Instagram to show their support and wish Alyssa a speedy recovery. Before John’s post, little has been said about any medical issues, so news of the medical procedure came as a shock.
The Bates family recently welcomed a grandson in November 2018, and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a granddaughter in July 2019. Alyssa and John have three children together. Their first child, Allie was born in April 2015. The couple’s second child Lexi was born in January 2017, followed by Zoey in March 2018.
