‘Dexter’ Fans React After OG Cast Member’s Casting in Revival Series
In a major casting development, actor John Lithgow has reportedly joined the Dexter revival. Lithgow previously played The Trinity Killer, a role that won him acclaim and even a Golden Globe. With the news of his return, social media erupted with reactions as many fans shared their approval of the casting.
John Lithgow is reportedly returning to ‘Dexter’
Deadline reported on Monday, June 28, that Lithgow will reprise his role in the revival series. His character, infamous for killing Dexter Morgan’s wife Rita, was murdered by Dexter in the fourth season, which raises questions about how he’ll come back. But Deadline reports that the writing team has figured out a way for him to return that “fits” into the overall story.
Lithgow will reportedly begin filming some time over “the next week or so” in Los Angeles. But apparently for only a day, suggesting that he might only appear on the revival in a small role. Showbiz Cheat Sheet reached out to representatives for Lithgow for further comment on his alleged involvement in Dexter Season 9 but did not hear back.
Fan reactions to John Lithgow’s casting in ‘Dexter’ Season 9
As the news of Lithgow’s casting circulated, the reactions began pouring out online. Even though there’s not a lot of information about his role, fans are just glad to see him return.
“Ooooh I am excited now, trinity was my favourite season,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
“He was so good as Arthur,” said a second person. “I hope to see him as the ‘Harry’. I hope a lot of characters make a reappearance in the Harry ghost-like way.”
“Has to be flashback, right?” read a third comment. “Maybe Trinity crossed paths with the new villain back in the day cuz uh yeah he’s dead!”
But someone else had another idea. “Dexter and Trinity had that conversation where he says ‘what else do I do? Fake my death, start over again?’ Which is exactly what he did. Probably will be [centered] around that notion,” they wrote.
No matter how he appears, it’s clear that fans will be happy to see him. Now we’ll just have to wait to see how it all comes together…
The ‘Dexter’ revival will pick up years after the events in the original series finale
Announced in October 2020, the Dexter revival will pick up on him 10 years after he fled Miami to go into exile. Dexter now resides in the fictional Iron Lake, New York, under the alias Jim Lindsay. He’s a salesman at a local store called Fred’s Fish & Game. But you can tell from the way he looks at a knife in one of the teaser trailers that he still has the urge to kill.
“He is more grounded than he’s ever been,” showrunner Clyde Phillips previously told TV Insider, “but that dark passenger is a voice he cannot deny. This is Dexter. People are going to die.”
The show will continue to film throughout the summer, with a reported release date in the fall.
“We have about five weeks to go,” Hall told Times Radio in June (via Digital Spy). “I think the whole shoot would have taken five months. It’s basically like we’re filming it as a 10-hour movie. It will be ten episodes, premiering at least in the States on Showtime on November 7.”
