Has Season 4 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Been Announced?
The Handmaid’s Tale, now on its third season, is proving to be more popular than ever. With Hulu dropping only one episode a week, it’s still pretty early to tell if the show will be renewed for a fourth season.
The story of June, the lead character played by Elisabeth Moss, still has viewers on the edge of their seats. Fans are holding their breath to see how she’s going to survive the totalitarian society that has been thrust upon her. The all too dark fictional world of Gilead has us counting our blessings and we are grateful we aren’t living “under his eye.”
Season 3 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is popular
Season 3 kicked off on Hulu in early June 2019. The show’s first three episodes were immediately available to appease the binge-watching crowd, but Hulu is carefully doling out the rest of the season one episode at a time. As much as it hurts to wait for its weekly release, Hulu has kept viewers on their toes by drawing them back week after week. Viewership just continues to grow too as the show gains in popularity each week.
At the end of season two, fans watched as June sent Baby Nicole off to safety in the arms of her friend Emily (Alexis Bledel). Our surprise at June’s decision to stay in Gilead was only matched by the heartbreak we felt as she watched her baby be driven away. Glimpses into Season 3 assure us that June’s sacrifice is going to be worth it, as she appears determined to fight.
Will ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ be renewed for a fourth season?
We think yes. But there has been no official announcements made yet by producers or writers. There seem to be lots of loose ends that the show can’t possibly tie up in a single season.
In a recent interview with Hulu CEO Randy Freer, he told Variety that The Handmaid’s Tale has been a really great experience for Hulu. Fan’s have even compared the success of Handmaid to the overwhelming popularity of HBO’s Game of Thrones.
“It’s accessible, it’s big, it’s bold, and it still keeps that conversation going,” Freer said. “They actually opened the writers’ room to the third season if you can believe it a couple weeks ago… The creative process will determine, is it a fourth season, is it five seasons?”
Freer speculates about how long the show will last and attributes that decision to the creative process: “…that’s one of the benefits for creators in the streaming world,” Freer explains, “shows can take a natural progression, they can live for as long as they should live or they can end. I think it’s unfair sometimes in the characterization of broadcast television that we talk about a show’s been canceled after four years or seven years, whatever it is… Look, I hope, as success goes, there’s 10 seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale.”
We’re hoping for 10 seasons too. At least.
When will season 4 of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ air?
Good Housekeeping reports that they recently spoke with executive producer Warren Littlefield about Season 4 of the show. He assures us that talks about future seasons will happen.
“We’re catching our breath from season 3, and then [creator Bruce Miller] and the writers will go into their think tank, and there’s still more stories to tell. There’s more of Gilead to fight,” he says.
How to stream ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
If you need to catch up on the first two seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale know that it’s a Hulu Original series, so all three seasons are available to stream from the service. Seasons 1 and 2 are up on Amazon for streaming too, but the cost to watch is significantly higher.
