How Does ‘The Good Place’ Cast Feel About the Show Ending?

The Good Place premiered in 2016 and has since captivated fans everywhere with its delightful plot and funny characters. After three seasons, the group of unlikely friends on the show almost seems like family to loyal viewers who tune in every week.

However, creator Michael Schur recently announced that the upcoming fourth season of The Good Place will be its last. It’s no doubt unfortunate news for fans, but do the cast members also feel the same way? What do they think about the series ending? Here’s what we know.

Why is ‘The Good Place’ coming to an end?

The truth is that The Good Place was never meant to go on for a long time. Unlike shows that continue to stay on the air for years and years, The Good Place was not created to be that way.

Schur made this quite clear last year in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said: “… this is not a show that is destined to be on for nine years. It’s not a 200-episode, Friends kind of a deal. It’s not a hangout show.”

As such, it seems that Schur and the creators have come up with a conclusion for The Good Place at the end of season 4. Schur elaborated on in a tweet:

“After The Good Place was picked up for season two, the writing staff and I began to map out, as best we could, the trajectory of the show. Given the ideas we wanted to explore, and the pace at which we wanted to present those ideas, I began to feel like four seasons — just over 50 episodes — was the right lifespan. At times over the past few years we’ve been tempted to go beyond four seasons, but mostly because making this show is a rare, creatively fulfilling joy, and at the end of the day, we don’t want to tread water just because the water is so warm and pleasant.”

How do the cast members of ‘The Good Place’ feel about the show ending?

Unlike fans who are just finding out about season 4 being the end, the cast actually already knew a long time ago. Schur said that he told them almost a year in advance since being on The Good Place is, after all, a full-time job and he wanted them to have enough time to figure out where to go after the show.

The cast members seem to have bittersweet feelings about the series ending.

“It’s super sad, but it also feels really right somehow,” D’Arcy Carden, who plays Janet, shared. She also went on to say that the experience is similar to “a breakup with someone that you’re still in love with, but you know it’s not forever. You’re like, ‘We can end this at a good place.'”

Season 4 already started filming a few months ago and Carden revealed that tears have indeed been shed on the set, especially by her and Kristen Bell, who plays Eleanor.

At a recent Emmy FYC panel, Ted Danson, who plays Michael, also said that he had a lot of respect for Schur and the writers to be able to end The Good Place with a finale that is right for it. “Any padding or over-telling a really great story would be a shame,” he commented.

Will the cast members keep in touch after ‘The Good Place’ ends?

The cast members of The Good Place seem to get along quite well, just like their characters on the show. It’s clear that we might never hear of drama or fights on the set of this NBC comedy.

However, whether they will continue to keep in touch after going their separate ways is still anyone’s guess. Since they are all actors who will most likely be taking on new projects, everyone’s schedule could be quite busy. But if two or more the cast members get to work together again, we’re sure that it will be a great Good Place reunion for fans everywhere.
