Joanna Gaines Reveals Her Top 5 Design Tips From Her New Book
If Joanna Gaines has any design ideas, we’ll listen. Luckily, the former-HGTV star never hesitates to share her strategies and tips — even though Fixer Upper is over. While you can certainly check Instagram to get your fix, that’s not the only place Gaines continues to inspire her fans. She’s written a number of books, and luckily for us, she’s released an all new book for us to buckle down and read.
It’s called Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave — and we definitely believe that the book will inspire just that. If you want to get even more excited to grab your own copy, Gaines shared the main takeaways you should look out for in the book. Here are the top 5 design tips from her new book, according to Gaines.
Good design doesn’t have to break the bank
People tend to think that styling your home to match your personal taste takes a lot of money. Gaines, however, insists that’s not the case. She shared, “I think there are some misconceptions out there that lead people to think that in order to create spaces you truly love, you have to spend a fortune or have flawless taste. I don’t believe that’s true.”
Style your home authentically
No matter how stylish a home is, if it doesn’t reflect your personal tastes, it will never feel as welcoming as you want it to. If your goal is to create a space that you never want to leave, you should always take authenticity into account first. “I think what matters most is that you surround yourself with things that tell your story,” Gaines advises.
Take design risks
You may be intimidated to do try out a bold design at home — but Gaines says to go for it! If you constantly play it safe, you may find yourself longing to switch up your designs more often than if you’d just gone for what may have seemed like a crazy idea. “Taking on a new design project or trying out something bold — even if it doesn’t work out — is not the end of the world!”
Gaines added, “Because you tried, you risked, you learned — and hopefully, you had some fun along the way.”
Learn from her mistakes
Gaines even welcomes fans to learn from the design mistakes she’s made over the years. Everything she touches may turn to gold, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t taken some trial-and-error to get to that point.
She explained, “Our farmhouse represents all that I’ve learned over the years — every design failure and every win I’ve experienced along the way. Our home isn’t perfect, but it’s our story that you see all around us there, which made it seem worth including in the book.”
Don’t follow design “guidelines” too closely
Even though Gaines is more than happy to share her advice, she doesn’t necessarily want you to follow her design strategies to a T. While you can certainly incorporate her tips, she emphasized that there aren’t any guidelines that make “good” or “bad” design.
She shared, “More than anything, I hope people will learn that good design isn’t achieved by following arbitrary guidelines or emulating a look they see in someone else’s home … What it comes down to is telling your story and incorporating the things you love into your home.”
