‘Never Have I Ever’ Is Renewed for Season 2 and These Are the Loose Ends the Hit Series Needs to Tie Up

The great news that Netflix has renewed season 2 of Never Have I Ever leads us to the unanswered questions the runaway hit from Lang Fisher and Mindy Kaling needs to bring closure to.

Will Devi Vishwakumar and her family move to India? Or will she stay in California? If she does, will Devi end up with Ben Gross or with Paxton Hall-Yoshida?

We can only wonder until the second season’s premiere, so let’s wonder!

The show’s big announcement

It wasn’t certain how Never Have I Ever would be received when it premiered on Netflix in April 2020. Despite Kaling’s star power behind it, the series was being helmed by an actor no one had heard of – yet – Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

The 18-year-old from Canada was chosen out of 15,000 candidates to fill enormous shoes on the new Mindy Kaling series. The first season quickly established the show as a must-watch hit and Ramakrishnan as a certified star.

And now, after months of fans speculating as to the future of the comedy-drama, it was finally announced on the show’s Instagram account that it had indeed been renewed for a second season.

“Maitreyi got bangs,” the series’ Instagram post read alongside a photo of the cast on a Zoom call showing Ramakrishnan sporting bangs, “oh yeah, and Never Have I Ever got a season 2.” Ramakrishnan replied to the post, “Season two, let’s go!”

Reflecting the sentiment of oh so many fans, Darren Barnet, who plays heartthrob Paxton Hall-Yoshida on the series, wrote “Show! I missed you!”

Will Devi and her mom move to India?

After Devi runs away from home following her huge blow-out with her mother, Nalini, played by Poorna Jagannathan, she stays with Ben Gross and his wealthy parents in his opulent home. Devi begins entertaining thoughts of becoming emancipated from her mother to avoid being spirited off to their country of origin.

Meanwhile, Devi’s mother, along with cousin Kamala, are headed to scatter into the ocean the ashes of Devi’s father who dies tragically at the beginning of the season. Devi decides, with the help of John McEnroe, who serves as something of a conscience for Devi in the show, that she needs to be there. She and her mother reconcile and it’s a finally tender moment between the two.

Season two needs to answer whether Devi will be more open to a move to India now that she and her mom have made peace. The fact that their home was so special to her late husband may keep Nalini stateside. On the other hand, raising her daughter on her own has been beyond difficult for Nalini and a stay in India with more family support may be what both mother and daughter need.

Will Devi end up with Ben Gross or Paxton Hall-Yoshida?

Season two also needs to address the love triangle between Devi, Paxton Hall-Yoshida, and Ben Gross, played by Jaren Lewison.

Ben, who starts off in the series as Devi’s enemy, is looking like a possible boyfriend for her by the final episode. He drives her to be with her mother and cousin as they scattered Mr. Vishwakumar’s ashes and waits for her. But should she date him?

As for Paxton, after Devi’s very forward proposition to him, which resulted in nothing, the two developed feelings for one another. But it’s been hot and cold between the pair.

Ramakrishnan weighed in on the Ben vs. Paxton question, telling StyleCaster in April 2020, “I’ve been asked if I’m Team Paxton or Team Ben. I’m like, ‘That’s disgusting. That sounds lame.’ Personally, I’m Team Devi. I can’t say either of them.”

“I think she needs to figure out herself and also make it up to Eleanor and Fabiola. She still has some work to do with her homegirls who have been there since day one.”

Netflix, while saying on the show’s page, “It’s Official: Another Season Is Coming,” hasn’t yet provided a date for season 2’s premiere date.
