‘The Sopranos Prequel’: Is Everyone Expecting Too Much From the Movie?

It is considered to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and for many fans, it redefined television for a generation. The Sopranos has been off the air for 12 years but the characters live on through reruns. For many years, the buzz about a possible prequel has been exciting fans. Recently, more information about the supposed prequel movie was unveiled, causing the internet to go into an uproar.

What was ‘The Sopranos’ about?

For a long time, the only thing viewers knew about the mafia was information gleaned from the 1970s movie series The Godfather. All of that changed when The Sopranos arrived on HBO in 1999. The show details the life of Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini. Soprano has to deal with his personal life and family struggles, while simultaneously balancing the responsibilities of masterminding a criminal organization. Soprano’s stories are told during his visits to a psychiatrist, lending the show originality and humor. The show was filmed almost entirely on location, which gave the show a realistic edge that fans loved.

In addition to James Gandolfini, The Sopranos starred Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Steven Van Zandt, and many more talented cast members. The show became an instant hit with fans and critics and went on to score a whole host of awards. During the run of The Sopranos, it won five Golden Globe Awards, 21 Emmy Awards, and several Peabody Awards. Although it went off the air in 2007, in a controversial manner that caused major fan outcry, the story of The Sopranos is far from over.

What we know about the ‘The Sopranos’ prequel

Sadly, Gandolfini passed away in 2013, putting an end to any future films or shows featuring Tony Soprano as fans knew him. However, in March 2018, it was announced that there was to be a prequel film featuring several characters from The Sopranos. Although many details about the film are being kept strictly under wraps, there are a few things that we have learned about the upcoming prequel.

The movie — titled The Many Saints of Newark — is set to be released in September 2020. Original show creator David Chase is involved in the film’s production and there are multiple big-name actors starring in the project. Most notably, the late James Gandolfini’s lookalike son, Michael Gandolfini, is attached to star in the project, playing a young Tony Soprano. Other featured actors include veteran gangster-film actor Ray Liotta, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, and John Magaro. The exact plot hasn’t been revealed but what we do know is that the film is set in the 1960s, during the time of the groundbreaking Newark riots.

Should fans be excited about the ‘The Sopranos’ movie?

While the initial reaction to the film was mixed, the casting announcement has peaked fan interest considerably. While the absence of James Gandolfini will definitely be felt by everyone, setting the film as a prequel definitely seems to be a smart decision. What’s more, show creator David Chase is involved as a writer so that ensures the tone and spirit of The Sopranos will be present. The cast includes a healthy mix of fresh faces and A-list stars, with Michael Gandolfini likely to be a standout. It seems that there’s good reason for fans to start getting excited about The Many Saints of Newark.

No matter what the critical reaction to the film will ultimately be, there’s little doubt that the prequel will generate a lot of buzz as the opening weekend draws closer. Fans of The Sopranos will certainly be lining up for tickets well in advance of the 2020 release date
