‘The Voice’: Why Is Adam Levine Really Quitting the Show?

The group of coaches on The Voice changes every season, so fans are used to seeing new faces and having some favorites leave. However, in a move that shocked everyone, the program revealed that long-time coach Adam Levine is quitting the show. So what exactly is happening and why is Adam leaving? Here’s what we know.

While being a coach on The Voice seems like a temporary, on-and-off position for many, Levine has been a fixture on the program since its debut in 2011. He and country star Blake Shelton are the only two coaches to have remained on The Voice consistently season after season.

Throughout the years, Levine has won The Voice three times — Shelton, his “rival,” is the only person to have more wins. The Maroon 5 frontman also reportedly makes around $50 million a year from this job at The Voice.

How Adam Levine upset many fans in Season 15

While fans initially loved Levine as a coach, in season 15, he did something that got a lot of people shaking their heads in disapproval.

Before the final week approached, Levine had two contestants – DeAndre Nico and Reagan Strange – who were up for elimination and given a chance to sing for the instant save. Unfortunately for 14-year-old Strange, she was sick and could not perform. Nico, on the other hand, went up on stage only to find that his own coach did not support him.

After Nico performed, Levine praised his performance, but then urged the audience to vote for Strange instead. Levine said: “I have a very special relationship with Reagan. And I have two little girls at home. The thought of breaking her heart by not urging everyone to give this girl a shot to go and redeem herself next week… would be too far beneath me. I appreciate what you [DeAndre] have done here tonight, but I gotta fight for my girl.”

This move earned Levine a lot of backlash from viewers. Both Nico and Strange were eliminated before the finale, leaving the coach with no contestants to compete in the end.

Although this controversial event happened last season, fans still haven’t forgotten about it. In season 16, which recently ended, Levine once again had no one on his team in the finale.

Why is Adam Levine leaving ‘The Voice’?

Some people believe that Levine’s declining popularity may have been a reason for his departure from the show, though the singer has never revealed exactly why he is leaving.

However, according to People, an inside source shared that Levine has been disappointed with some of the changes made to The Voice for quite a while now. “Adam’s decision was a difficult one for him,” the source said. “It had nothing to do with backlash.”

Another reason that has been thrown out there is that Levine is frustrated with how The Voice constantly favors country music. With coaches like Shelton and Kelly Clarkson preferring country-minded contestants, and viewers voting for them in droves (at least until recently), it’s no secret that watching The Voice can sometimes be a disappointing experience for those who would like to see other kinds of music make it to the top.

Despite all of these speculations, though, Levine is not burning any bridges between him and The Voice. In a long post on Instagram, Levine shared many great things about the show: “It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever. Thank you NBC for signing me up. I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life.”

It has been announced that Gwen Stefani will take over Levine’s place in season 17, which will premiere in the fall of 2019.
