These Kendall Jenner Instagram Posts Sparked a Huge Backlash
Kendall Jenner is used to fans watching her every move on Keeping Up With the Kardashians. In Season 14 of the reality TV show, she addressed the infamously pulled Pepsi ad she starred in, apologizing for her involvement and stating she never intended to offend anyone.
Controversy now seems to follow Jenner wherever she goes, and Instagram has become a prime platform for followers to pick apart each of her scandals. Here are 7 of Jenner’s Instagram posts that have sparked backlash from fans and haters alike.
1. Posting this photo in the midst of the Fyre Festival controversy
In case you forgot about the Fyre Festival controversy, we’ll take a walk down memory lane. Many popular models, such as Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Emily Ratajkowski, advocated for their fans to purchase tickets to the 2017 festival. A weekend would cost you a whopping $250,000. However, the festival organizers promised luxurious accommodations and performances by some of the biggest artists, including Blink 182 and Tyga.
Fyre Festival didn’t exactly live up to expectations. The organizers barely provided food or a place to sleep to festival-goers, and none of the performers showed up. Unsurprisingly, all of the models who advertised for the event received tons of backlash. All while the controversy was happening, Jenner posted this topless Instagram photo, captioned, “Playing dress up.”
While she avoided addressing the failed event, many took to Twitter to share their feelings. One user wrote, “@KendallJenner girl, you better show up and hand a pepsi to everyone scammed by fyre fest quick.”
2. Adidas choosing Jenner over an athlete for an ad
People were outraged when Adidas chose Jenner to feature in the Adidas Originals ad on its Instagram account. Many commented that an athlete would have been far more appropriate and deserving than the reality TV star and model.
“I faced it all, and I stood tall. I did it my my way,” Jenner proclaims in the ad.
One user commented, “How about an athlete representative? How about someone who had to struggle with real challenges to do it their way? Bad choice @adidasoriginals I won’t buy anything from you until her contract is done. You can do way better than THIS.”
3. Her glamorization of smoking
Jenner’s caption of “I don’t smoke” may be her way of saying “I’m not advertising smoking,” but we’re not convinced. While, yes, it’s great that she’s telling her fans that she’s not a smoker, that doesn’t keep this post from glamorizing the deadly habit.
To be honest, if she hadn’t drawn attention to the cigarette by saying “I don’t smoke,” we may not have even realized it was there. As one Instagram user commented, “So don’t advertise smoking lol…. it’s not cool or cute. But nice photo.”
4. These controversial vintage tees
Nobody seemed to be on board when Kendall and her younger sister, Kylie, put out a line of $125 “vintage” tees. They basically screen-printed their own faces on top of iconic band logos, such as Metallica, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin.
While many thought the fashion move was a poor choice, no one seemed to be angrier than The Notorious B.I.G.’s mother, Voletta Wallace. Two of the shirts included photos of the late Tupac Shakur and Biggie. Wallace called it “disrespectful, disgusting, and exploitation at its worst!!!”
The Jenner sisters issued an apology and removed the shirts from their website, but only after they received this serious backlash.
5. Cultural appropriation accusations
This time, the Jenners’ clothing line controversy wasn’t over the shirts themselves. Rather, the way they styled the look sparked backlash about cultural appropriation. Both Jenner sisters were accused of using Latina culture to sell their clothing, which one Twitter user had a lot to say about:
I first saw the image on the explore page and I immediately noticed something was wrong when I saw that it was posted on the @kendalandkylie page. What bothers me is that they don’t ever come up with their own original ideas. They are always taking ideas from others and never give credit. Aside from being unoriginal, it’s definitely irritating to see these girls making money off a culture they know absolutely nothing about. When we — Latinas and Xicanas — dress in flannels and big pants, we get profiled and frowned upon. But when they do it, it’s “fashion.”
The Jenners have since deleted the photo, but screenshots live on forever.
6. Her Fourth of July post
Jenner has a tradition of posting racy photos on the Fourth of July. In 2017, people were talking for a new reason. As Hollyscoop puts it, “There’s plenty things fans could have picked apart in this photo.”
While, yes, the photo reveals all, people weren’t exactly shocked, given the number of times she’s shown off her body before. They weren’t even upset over her use of the American flag emoji, considering it could have come off the wrong way when paired with the risqué photo.
Instead, fans were overwhelmingly concerned about her weight. One fan wrote, “You look really thin. Hope this wasn’t photoshopped to look like this.”
While Jenner has said she’s been working with a new trainer, that hasn’t kept fans from thinking she might be taking her weight loss too far.
7. Photoshop, plastic surgery, or the perfect angle?
Jenner’s followers were skeptical about this Instagram post. After all, she has been baring a thinner body. In an exposing red leotard, she’s purposefully showing off her curvy assets. Maybe it was just the angle, but people seem to think her newly voluptuous look is the work of Photoshop or plastic surgery.
Some comments on the post included, “When did you get your butt done?” and “Why is it all pixelated and weird looking.” Jenner isn’t one to respond to the majority of her controversial moments, so we’ll likely never know the truth behind her Instagram secrets.
