When Will Season 3 of ’13 Reasons Why’ Be Available for Streaming?

13 Reasons Why, the Netflix original based on the young adult novel by Jay Asher, premiered on March 31, 2017. The story follows the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s suicide. Baker, a young girl who moves to a new town, takes her life after being raped, ridiculed, and bullied by classmates.

Shortly after her suicide, a fellow student – one who happened to have a crush on Hannah – finds a box on his porch with 13 tape recordings inside. Each one reveals another reason Hannah chose to kill herself, and each person who had a part in her suicide is on tape.

While season two of 13 Reasons Why did not receive the rave reviews that season one was so fortunate to earn, followers of the show still enjoyed watching. So, those who have been following the series will be able to, once again, witness the characters face internal conflicts, manage rivalries, and cope with emotional hardship. If it hasn’t yet become apparent, though a compelling show, this one’s not for the light of heart.

Season 3 of ’13 Reasons Why’ will be released this year

Though Netflix renewed 13 Reasons Why for a third season, an exact date has not been announced. As of now, the show will debut early to mid-2019 with 13 episodes.

According to Variety, the news came three weeks after the launch of season two. Since season one premiered at the end of March and season two became available for streaming in May, it’s likely that season three will also see a Spring release; however, this is not a definite.

Brian Yorkey, the series creator, will return for season three as executive producer alongside Joy Gorman, Mandy Teefey, Tom McCarthy, and Selena Gomez, the latter of whom has been a driving force behind the show since it’s beginnings, according to Variety.

Who will be in season 3 of ‘13 Reasons Why?’

While season one of 13 Reasons Why was based on Jay Asher’s novel, season two was completely original. The first season went through Hannah’s 13 tapes, leaving no source material left to explore once the season ended; thus, who the dominant characters will be as the show moves forward is mostly up to the series’ creators.

While Katharine Langford, the 22-year-old actress who plays Hannah Baker, appeared in the first two seasons – when showing clips from the past or characters’ memories – she will have a much smaller role in the upcoming season, according to DigitalSpy.

Though Baker might not have as much screen time as fans are accustomed to, she will still be ever-present as the characters continue to come to terms with how their lives have transformed since her suicide, according to Yorkey.

According to DigitalSpy, it is likely that all of the main players from the first two seasons will return for the third installment. Dylan Minette, Christian Navarro, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, and Alisha Boe are all expected to return.

Dylan Minette plays the main protagonist: Emotionally battered and broken-hearted, Clay Jenson who struggles to come to terms with his role in Hannah’s suicide.

As for the supporting cast, Christian Navarro plays the “tape-master,” so to speak, as he is the one who keeps Baker’s promise to get the tapes out. Brandon Flynn plays the cute Justin Foley who dates Baker early on; he later fabricates tales about Baker and their supposed sexual relations. Justin Prentice stars as the affluent teenager Bryce Walker, who rapes Baker and goes on to rework the story to suit his preferences. And finally, Alisha Boe plays a friend turned enemy, as the two have feelings for the same boy.

While Hannah Baker may not even see the screen, the characters you’ve come to know and love, who must move forward from her death, will be front and center.
